In December 2011, trustees of the Peel District School Board decided to rename Hartsdale Avenue Public School in honour of Janet McDougald – trustee for Mississauga wards 1 and 7.
McDougald expressed her gratitude in a press release issued by the Peel District School Board. “This is so special—to have a school named for me, and especially for the school to be in my community. Thank you to all of my trustee colleagues. This is truly an amazing honour," she said.
Randall Malley, a parent of a student at the renamed school, challenged the process – and the necessity – of renaming a school. In a video, posted on YouTube, Malley says “there was not a need to rename the school.”
“Furthermore, this unnecessary name change was implemented immediately - literally overnight – without warning or a transition period. This has resulted in undeniable confusion and disruption for all significant parties involved.”
Malley argues to the school board that the decision to change the name of a school should be public, saying school names are important and “much too important to be decided by a few trustees in secrecy or private.”
Sound-off:
Should schools be named in private by school officials? Or do you agree with Randall Malley – should the naming of schools be left to the public? Let us know what you think by visiting Global Toronto on Facebook and sharing your opinion. - http://www.facebook.com/GlobalToronto

If it's public funds, the public should get a say. 16 hours ago

Many people on the board have dedicated their lives to bettering our childrens education, so why not honnor what they have done by naming a school after them. In the end it's not the name that even matters, it's the education children are getting inside the school that counts. People should spend their time on who is educating our kids and not the name of the school.
