More trees coming out of the woods

Mississauga is going to take more trees out of the Cawthra Woods, but this time there's unlikely to be any controversy.

Mississauga's Urban Forest Management Advisory Committee, which gives council advice on tree issues, has recommended five Norway Maples be removed from the woodlot.

Norway Maple is an invasive species that, over time, can crowd out many native trees. As well as removing the five large trees, it is proposed that Norway maple saplings be removed early in the spring.

It is proposed to re-sow the area where the trees are removed with native hardwood species.

There was a large outcry a few years ago when the City removed a large number of trees as part of a culling program to improve the overall health of the stand of trees.

A number of trees were also removed last year for the installation of a huge watermain through the back of the woodlot.
