Tunnelling to save Cawthra trees could cost taxpayers $1-2 million

Tunnelling a water main through the Cawthra Bush to save trees now planned to be cut will cost $1-2 million more, regional council hag been told.

Public Works Commissioner Don Markle said Thursday that the job to install the large new Hanlan feeder main through the beautiful wood lot on Cawthra Rd. at the Queen Elizabeth Way has already been tendered.

While the Ontario Clean Water Agency is the proponent for the main, the Region of Peel and its taxpayers are funding it. The main is now planned to be installed through an open cut, resulting in the removal of some 700 trees.

In a delegation Thursday, two Mississauga residents asked the project be reconsidered.

Sheila Kuja, a former employee of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and Nature Conservancy of Canada, said the 64 acre wood is an environmentally significant area and is designated as an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI).

She asked that the potential damage to the area's ecology, which includes several rare species, be minimized by another review. As far as she knows, Kuja said, there was never an environmental impact study done for the work.

Don Barber of the group Friends of Cawthra Bush and a candidate for mayor, said the MNR has withdrawn its previous approval of the project.

That prompted Mayor Hazel McCallion to ask for written proof of Barber's statement, which he promised to produce.

McCallion said the City approved the tree-cutting in the wood lot on the advice of the Credit Valley Conservation Authority and the MNR: "two agencies that are responsible for protecting the environment."

Several councillors disputed Barber's contention that the public wasn't aware of the water main project, saying there were public meetings about the project over several years.

Peel Chairman Emil Kolb, said staff will be happy to meet with the residents to try to provide updated information on the project, which is scheduled to take place this winter.

[COMMENTS BY DON B. - The City was invited to the meeting held by Peel but failed to show, guess they didn't care. ]
