Toronto residents love our mayor Is Hazel the 'Greatest Living Torontonian?'
[ Under picture of her in council. ] Today Mississauga, tomorrow the world. Toronto residents seem to love our Mayor Hazel McCallion.
Is Mayor Hazel McCallion, who is merely synonymous with Mississauga and well-known as a long-time Toronto basher, about to be voted the greatest living Torontonian?
Don't laugh. Because she is just that, in the minds of thousands of people who voted for her in Global TV's "Greatest Living Torontonian" contest.
McCallion joins legendary entrepreneur 'Honest Ed' Mirvish, Argonauts head coach Mike 'Pinball' Clemons, comedian Mike Myers and UN special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa Stephen Lewis in the final five.
More than 10,000 people have weighed in on who they believe has done the most to make Toronto a great city. The finalists were whittled down from a list of 15 candidates that included author Margaret Atwood, media mogul Ted Rogers and hockey superstar Doug Gilmour. Journalist and activist June Callwood and Hollywood actor Jim Carrey made it to the final 10 before being cut.
"All these people make up the character of Toronto. It's a great way of showing who has contributed a great deal to this place," said Global's Antony Robart, who is co-ordinating the contest.
"I believe people voted for (McCallion) because of what she has done for the whole of the GTA," he said. "It's difficult to talk about the growth of Toronto without talking about the growth of Mississauga," said Robart.
The deadline to vote is Thursday. Global News will announce the winner the next day.
