Globe & Mail - Mar. 14, 2007 - By Canadian Press Dion calls for more police officers The Liberal leader, who unveiled the party's new law-and-order platform today in Mississauga, Ont., said the Conservative government has failed to deliver on its promise to hire 2,500 new officers. The platform includes, among other things, $200 million for the RCMP to help combat gun and gang activity and drug trafficking, as well as to toughen laws to protect society's most vulnerable. Mr. Dion also wants to strengthen laws to protect children from Internet luring, and will take the advice of the federal privacy commissioner by better safeguarding seniors against identity theft. Mr. Dion said he also supports the Tory initiative for reverse onus bail hearings, which would require those accused of gun crimes to prove they aren't a danger before being released.
