Mayor not helped by son’s testimony

The jury is out in the wake of Peter McCallion’s vacillating testimony last week at the Mississauga judicial inquiry — at least among City councillors.

Even Mayor Hazel McCallion’s closest Council supporters, who've criticized the $5-million probe as a vengeful attack on the mayor and a waste of taxpayer dollars, are reserving final judgement.

Ward 3 Councillor Maja Prentice still supports McCallion, noting it was no secret the City has long wanted an upscale hotel in City Centre.

She says she’s waiting for the mayor’s day on the witness stand to hear what she has to say.

“I’m certainly not saying that the mayor has not done anything wrong or has done something wrong.  I’m certainly not in that position to judge,” said Prentice, who's retiring after 25 years on Council.

Other McCallion backers also appear to be laying low.  Ward 8 Councillor Katie Mahoney, for instance, refused comment.

Peter McCallion has testified that neither he nor his mother knew at the time he was a principal of World Class Developments (WCD), which sought to develop a hotel/convention centre complex in the downtown core.  Grilled repeatedly by City external lawyer Clifford Lax, he said he believed himself to simply be a real estate agent, even after he signed papers giving him 80 per cent of WCD’s shares, a transaction his mother signed as a witness.

This phase of the inquiry is probing the extent of the mayor’s involvement amid questions about whether it represents a conflict of interest.

Ward 6 Councillor Carolyn Parrish, one of seven councillors who pushed for the inquiry, believes the tide is turning against the McCallions in light of testimony heard to date.

“Most of the e-mails I’ve received recently are from residents expressing shock at the revelations they’ve heard,” she said.

Ward 10 Councillor Sue McFadden said she had been getting complaints from residents that taxpayers were being forced to pay Peter McCallion’s legal fees.  The inquiry was told McCallion had financial difficulties and had been unable to make about six months of payments on a house he’s renting.

However, given his share of a $4-million out-of-court settlement WCD received from Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System following the collapse of the land deal, Parrish believes he should pay his own legal way.  She'll introduce a motion at tomorrow’s Council meeting to request that the inquiry commissioner reconsider his decision to have the taxpayer foot Peter McCallion's bills.

McFadden plans to second the motion.

Hazel McCallion Scandal Sickens Residents

Muse Muse Muse did not we hear of the document that gave Peter ownership (80%) of WCD? Did we hear how the son signed and the Mayor witnessed this document handed to them over dinner by a third adult. Now we are to believe the farse that they neither read nor understood the document. Look either she either did not read it or is not telling the truth both mean time for a new Mayor -- applicants need to be able to read.

@ Max Mad

You wrote, "Why would Parrish introduce a motion when the commissioner has already ruled on his bills, and said he won't reopen the issue? Wouldn't be for the publicity, would it?" Nope. It's because what with the new evidence that emerged July 27/28th even the Commissioner is wondering why Peter McCallion never advised the Inquiry of his potential new-found moneys. As for your comment, "BTW, another Parrish trick is claiming she has a flood of e-mails supporting her. I say show them!", Uatu's got a terrific point with, "I think Carolyn Parrish should hold off revealing her emails until the Mayor releases the huge collection she keeps hinting darkly about." And I'll add, I want to see all those flood of emails claimed by Mullin, Prentice, Mahoney and Saito opposing the sale of Enersource! Not because I don't believe they exist. Rather for the NAMES (employees, OMERS-retirees, sycophants of the evil empire...aka "Friends of Hazel)... Boy! What this Inquiry has revealed about OMERS and Enersource! *shudder*

@Tony

This is an inquiry not a trial so technically the Mayor won't be found "guilty" of anything. She might be found to have acted any or all of negligently, irresponsibly, unethically, or even fraudulently. If criminal behaviour is found then it will be up to the Crown Attornies to do their own investigation and determine whether charges will be laid. Unless and until that happens (not a chance in a million in my opinion) using the term "guilty" plays into the hands of the hazelbots, who refuse to accept the broad meaning of guilty ("having done wrong") and insist instead on the technical legal definition ("having been convicted of a crime").

Typical Parrish

Why would Parrish introduce a motion when the commissioner has already ruled on his bills, and said he won't reopen the issue? Wouldn't be for the publicity, would it? Nobody should be commenting publicly on the inquiry until ALL the testimony is heard, but that doesn't stop you-know-who. Reason #435 why she should NEVER be mayor. BTW, another Parrish trick is claiming she has a flood of e-mails supporting her. I say show them!

If found guilty, Hazell will be asked to do some community service, such as giving seminars to students on her experiences as a great mayor. Thats how this stinging biased system works.

Hazel McCallion Scandal Grows and Grows

Guess what Hazelites... I noticed you like to erase my comments as the truth hurts so I have a new deal for you. If you erase me from now on I repost twice. Explain that to her majesty. By the way what should the punishment be for a Mayor who was convicted of conflict of interest before and now has abused her office again? She did not learn the first time so what should be done?
