New conflict bill unfair, McCallion says

Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion is malting a last-ditch appeal to Premier Bob Rae to stop new conflict of interest legislation for municipal politicians before it is proclaimed law April 15.

The bill has passed third reading in the Legislature but remains seriously flawed and will deter people from running for office because of the potential problems it will create, McCallion says.

The commissioner appointed to oversee the law will not have the power to dismiss frivolous complaints.

"Just before an election, you could go before the commissioner and say that Joe Blow is guilty of a conflict and it will just sit there (while being investigated). It's a good way for somebody to get a politician," McCallion says.

On the other hand, the commissioner who deals with conflict complaints made against MPPs does have the power to dismiss frivolous complaints.
