Mississauga News - Jan 4, 2007 - By Baggage handlers charged with theft For the third time in less than three years, police have broken up a major theft ring run by employees at Pearson International Airport (PIA). Peel Regional Police have arrested seven baggage handlers at the airport in Mississauga and recovered more than $12,000 in stolen goods, according to Detective Malcolm Bow of the airport division's Criminal Investigation Unit. Police say passengers' bags were being targeted, especially for electronic items such as digital cameras and cell phones, which were taken directly out of luggage and later smuggled out of the airport. The thieves, who all worked in the same area of Terminal 3, also stole jewels and clothes. "These people were good at selecting the bags to steal from," Bow told The Toronto Sun. "They knew what they wanted." The arrests were made after a four-month undercover investigation, which was launched after a large number of complaints were received from the public. "The number of thefts was a big concern," Bow said. A total of 18 charges of theft. Home Page - Main Table of Contents - Back up a page - Back to Top [COMMENTS BY DON B. - ] |
