The mayor apparently believes so and is making no apologies for scheduling a business trip to China and Japan just a couple of weeks before the Nov. 13 balloting. "The job of the mayor and councillors carries on whether there's an election or not," McCallion said during a City council meeting Wednesday when she was questioned - See McCallion page 4 McCallion is in a race to win back her seat * Continued from page 1 on the matter by a member of the public. "This trip to China and Japan has been in the works for six months." She's going to China for the of a new plant in which Biotech Mississauga is involved, She's then going on to Kobe, Japan to report to a World Health Organization body which she chairs, on a pilot project being developed in Mississauga. This will be a real feather in our hat," McCallion said of the health program. "The idea is how a City can work health prevention into every aspect of every service it delivers." The University of Toronto at Mississauga and Peel Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown are among those collaborating on the venture. McCallion has already informed local ratepayers groups that she will be out of town for about a week during the campaign and has asked them not to schedule all-candidates' session then. She will be missing at least one event in Ward 3 which couldn't be moved. Meanwhile, nominations closed Friday, McCallion found out she had three challengers for the mayor's job. Donald Barber, a long-time critic of McCallion and a two time challenger to the throne, through his hat into the ring Thursday. On Friday, a professional impersonator of rock star Rod Stewart, who became so enamored with his stage persona that he changed his name to Rod Stewart, entered the fray. So did political newcomer Kanwaaljit Singh Kanwal of Malton. McCallion has won easily at the polls for several elections. The past few contests have seen her roll over her rivals, usually collecting at least 90 per cent of the vote in the process. The first announced challenger to her 22-year rein at the top, Shaun Justin Sequeira, dropped out of the race Wednesday. Sequeira said he was not asked to withdraw from the race by supporters of the mayor, as another young mayoralty hopeful was several years ago.
