Inquiry report unlikely before vote

Mississaugans could go to the polls on Oct. 25 without knowing what's in the final report that will be issued following the ongoing judicial inquiry into a controversial land deal involving the mayor's son.

The inquiry has just four more days scheduled to hear evidence including today and Monday through Thursday next week.  It has still to hear from numerous key witnesses, including Mayor Hazel McCallion herself.

Commission counsel William McDowell confirmed yesterday that the inquiry likely will run into early October.

Lawyers for the mayor already have expressed their concerns about the inquiry extending into the municipal election campaign.  They have asked Justice Douglas Cunningham, the commissioner for the inquiry, to suspend the hearings if they go later than Sept. 10, the last day for candidates to register.

Cunningham was asked to impose a six-week delay in proceedings until after the voting takes place.  He reserved judgment on the request at the time.

Among those yet to testify at the hearings are developers Leo Couprie and Tony DeCicco, who were involved with Peter McCallion in a failed bid to bring a five-star hotel to the lands just north of the Living Arts Centre.

Hazel McCallion, Mississauga's mayor since 1978, has indicated she will seek re-election, but she has not formally registered yet.

If hearings continue into September, it's highly unlikely the commissioner's report will be finalized and released before the municipal vote.

Yesterday, Ward 6 Councillor Carolyn Parrish, one of seven members of council who voted to hold the inquiry, expressed concern about the potential delay.

“I’m concerned that some witnesses, who have known of the inquiry’s schedule for months, are delaying their appearances before the commissioner for a variety of reasons, some of which are weak at best,” Parrish told The National Post.  “This increases the costs to the taxpayers.”

Those costs have already reached an estimated $5 million.

Complicating matters is the fact that Mayor McCallion is scheduled to vacation in Italy during the last week of August.  A bidder at the mayor's annual gala in November bought the trip and asked the mayor to go along.

Meanwhile, the inquiry resumes this morning at 10 a.m. with testimony from Craig Coleman, president, officer and director of 156 Square One Ltd.

Later today, former City Manager David O'Brien will take the stand.

Why Would We Do So?

Why, exactly would be do that Mississauga Muse? You continually SPAM these message boards with repeated cross-posts of such links. It's boorish behavior that flies in the face of proper "Netiquette". It, along with the keeping of secret Stalist/Gestapo files on other posters says a lot about the person doing it.

@Missy2

Please stick around. The Barberites and Vulgar Shrew backers are a tiny, miniscule minority in this city but they have completely infested this site. It's important that we get as many majority voices here as we can. I know it's frustrating when every single solitary article is spammed by dozens and dozens of long drawn out nonsense posts by the likes of Mississauga Muse but we can't simply abandon this site to them. They have indeed caused the vast majority of people to give up on this site and I'd hate to see any more leave. I'll be the first to admit that the usefulness of the comment feature has been litterally reduced to zero by people like Mississauga Muse using it as her own personal forum but we can fight back.

Brush up on your READING SKILLS NUMNUTZ! I wrote, "Because Mississauga voters HAVE no values." And it was Justaniopion who CORRECTLY wrote, "Our mayor could be caught, in the library, with the candlestick in her hand, over the dead body, and she would still win by a landslide!" And I'm sure that HE will stand by that. And SO DO I! REPEATING what Justanopinion wrote, " "Our mayor could be caught, in the library, with the candlestick in her hand, over the dead body, and she would still win by a landslide!" And why IS that? Because Mississauga voters HAVE no values!

@Muse

How dare you say that all Mississauga residents have no values. Just because we don't share the venomous hate for the Mayor that you have doesn't mean we don't have values. Just because we don't judge on innuendo and want facts, just because we have to go to work each day to make ends meet rather than spending our days putting up hateful blogs doesn't mean we don't have values. If you have such a low opinion of your fellow residents then get out! This is still a democracy and what each one of us thinks matters, whether you agree or not. You and your Barberites will never get majority support not because Miss residents have no values, but because we do have values and those values are not consistent with your hate mongering and character assassination ways, pure and simple. And now I'm gone from these message boards for good. They are nothing but a propaganda forum for Mayor haters.

@ Justaniopion re: Face reality

You wrote, "Our mayor could be caught, in the library, with the candlestick in her hand, over the dead body, and she would still win by a landslide!" I've said that all along. That Mississauga-voters don't care one micro-second if our mayor were "caught, in the library, with the candlestick in her hand, over the dead body." As long as she promised to keep taxes low and protect property values that's all that matters. Because Mississauga voters HAVE no values. And There In lies the Roots of Youth Violence. Lies.

When Harold Shipp went up before Council and threatened the Seven Councillors with defeat this election, they all hung tough. All. Even though they know MYTHissauga politics better than either you or me. Know the Power of the Friends of Hazel. So why did they do that when playing along with Harold would've been the safest and above all easiest route?

@ Fartleberry (believe it or not they got that timing right)

You wrote, "The terms of reference should have had this wrapped up prior to the election instead of handling the Enersource issue first." Actually, I think the investigators did it in exactly the right order. Temporal. Enersource came first and anyone who followed that got huge insights that now hold them in good stead for this round of the Inquiry. Although one huge matzoh ball was left out of Part 1 of the Inquiry Soup. That David O'Brien was the trustee to the McCallion family trust. And the number of times O'Brien visits the Mayor. Remember how it was revealed that O'Brien took over a year to answer the Mayor's email regarding the "veto clause"? And she gave the Commissioner this song and dance about how she wanted a response "in writing"?.. Add to that her Enersource telecast saying she wanted the people to have all the answers possible? That stinksstinksSTINKS now.

Holy Crap Carolyn

Of all the people on council, you with you MP experience should have seen this coming And to be honest, probably knew this would be the case all along. None of thse inquiry's ever run along the initial time lines, or cost what they were initially budgeted for. People who are asked to testify, like Couprie and DeCicco have lives and cannot drop everything to come here ad testify. These are business people who still need to put food on the table.

Why didn't I see that one coming?

The terms of reference should have had this wrapped up prior to the election instead of handling the Enersource issue first. This sort of talk will see it prolonged forever while the parties repeatedly come back to us for more money.
