Mississauga News - Dec. 14, 2011 - By Julia Le - jle@mississauga.net School renaming passed Hartsdale Public School. The new name was publicly received by trustees, without debate, at a Board meeting held last night. During a private meeting earlier this fall, trustees decided to rename the south Mississauga school after McDougald, who's been a trustee for 23 years and Board chair for the past 14 consecutive terms. The decision was announced Dec. 1 during the Board's inaugural meeting for the new school year. Some parents have called on McDougald to decline the honour. She's responded that she will not do so, adding she's received many calls of support. During Tuesday's meeting, Helen O'Malley, whose son attends the school, pleaded with the Board to reconsider its decision. She said the focus should be on the children. "When the trustees made their decision, were and are the trustees aware of what the students endured over the past three years?" she asked the Board. O'Malley said the students have experienced "constant change, uncertainty and delays" while the community has gone through the disruption of a school closing process in which three area schools were amalgamated. She added the one thing the students could count on was the school's name. Much thought and hard work was put into coming up with a new mascot/team name, the Hartsdale Huskies, O'Malley noted. "The heart has been ripped from the kids and the Hartsdale Huskies," she said, adding trustees have behaved in self-serving fashion. McDougald responded that the Huskies name will remain, as will the school colours. Meanwhile, Michael Lucid, a concerned resident, told McDougald there's a clear conflict of interest. "If you want to fathom how these people here voting to name a school for you is not a conflict of interest, I'd love to hear from you," he said, addressing the Board chair. McDougald said she'll agree to disagree, but noted that, legally, there is no conflict of interest. |
