Students won't get bused

Parents of grades 7 and 8 students at Queenston Drive Public School were told last night by the Peel District School Board that their children are not eligible to be bused.

Addressing the parents at a meeting of the Board, chair Janet McDougald said their request to have students bused to and from the Erindale Woodlands area school, out of concern for their children's safety, was considered.  However, she added, the Board will not make an exception to its student transportation policy.

The Board contacted the Mississauga Traffic Safety Council after its Nov. 22 meeting, at which Jane McCann, chair of the school's parent council, was joined by fellow council member Sanja Pajovic to ask that students be allowed to take the bus.

McCann said the children must cross busy intersections such as Creditview Rd. and Burnhamthorpe Rd. W., and Rathburn Rd. W. and Creditview Rd., near Erindale GO station.  She added some students choose to cross the railway tracks because it cuts down on their trip.

In previous years, grades 7 and 8 students were provided "courtesy" seats on buses, parents argued. Students in kindergarten through Grade 6 are bused daily and, if there's room, older students were allowed to sit in the unoccupied seats.

However, due to space constraints this year, extra seats were only provided to some older students, said McCann.

McDougald said the Board did its "due diligence" regarding the matter.  "There are no concerns with the walking routes or the intersections ...," she said.  "So, what we're saying is there are no exceptionalities in your neighbourhood based on the information that we have and, therefore ... you are not eligible for busing."
