Prefers the chauffeur

Passenger seat minister has trouble buckling UP

Tony Clement, Minister of Transportation, joined local officials for the opening of the newest extension to the 407 toll highway. After a round of speeches and congratulatory backslapping, the rookie minister was talked into the driver's seat of a van emblazoned with "407" logos for a photo opportunity, just before the inaugural drive down the highway. Clement, who normally prefers to be chauffeured rather than driving himself, was well into the pictorial session before someone asked whether he shouldn't be wearing a seat belt for the pictures. After quickly buckling up, he half-jokingly offered to purchase all copies of photos showing the Minister of Transportation in the driver's seat without a seat belt. When the pix were done, the Minister returned to the safety of the passenger seat.

When you ask Glenn Grice how he's doing these days, you get the following standard response: "not bad for a guy who's had two heart attacks and a stroke in the last year." Grice - . the first chairman of the Peel Board of Education when it was formed in 1969 and later a City councillor on two occasions attended the recent Peel Region inaugural meeting in Caledon. He now lives in Caledon after spending most of his life in Mississauga. For many years, Grice was the owner and operator of the pitch and putt Hawthorne Valley Golf Course on Hurontario St. Despite his health setbacks; Grice is just as sharp as ever.

Speaking of sharp... Mayor Hazel McCallion has a tendency to be somewhat sharp in her criticism of other levels of government. In her remarks at the same inaugural session, she made reference to her penchant for pugnacity. The mayor gave the audience a snapshot of this standard prayer she uses. It went, "Dear God: I've been pretty good today. I haven't cut up the federal or provincial government. I haven't gossiped and I haven't lost my temper. I've not been grumpy. But in a few minutes, Lord, I'm going to get out of bed and I'll probably need a lot of help."

Heidi Schrouder of the Friends of Cawthra Bush went to the Central Library recently to take the City up on its advertised offer to borrow a copy of the management plan for the woodlot. The City has been advertising that residents can borrow the plan from local libraries to review it. Schrouder couldn't find any library staff who knew anything about the plan. Finally, one copy was located in the incoming tray, but Schrouder was told she couldn't take it because it was the only copy available. After talking to seven different people at City Hall, the library staffer was told she could lend out the management plan and City Hall would provide another to the library. Needless to say Schrouder was disappointed that she had so much difficulty taking the City at its word to borrow the report.
