Mississauga News - Dec. 2, 2010 - By Roger Belgrave McDougald back as chair Peel's public school trustees formally took their posts last night and promptly selected two members to lead them over the next four years. Trustees, newly-elected to the Peel District School Board in October's municipal vote, officially signed the oath of office during an inaugural meeting at the board's Mississauga headquarters. Student musical performances provided entertainment during intermissions at the new board's first meeting, held to carry out necessary organizational duties. Meanwhile, trustees selected a chair and vice-chair to serve as the board's political leaders and voice for the next year. Mississauga trustee Janet McDougald was returned to head the board as chair. She was the only member nominated, with trustees demonstrating unanimous support for the woman who has now held the post for the past 13 years. McDougald provides experience, strength and continuity, according to Brampton Trustee Beryl Ford. She has a demonstrated record of diligence, commitment and advocacy for students, Ford said. Janet McDougald is a strong voice for public education, said Ford. Brampton trustee Suzanne Nurse was elected as vice-chair. Both McDougald and Nurse thanked board members for their support and confidence. McDougald promised the board would continue to defend public education during the next term and fight to get local students their fair share of provincial government funding.
