Mississauga News - Feb. 24, 2011 - By Roger Belgrave School board up $6M When Peel District School Board finance staff closed the books on the 2009/10 school year, nearly $6 million was left unspent. The Board's $5.9-million surplus from last year can largely be attributed to lower-than-anticipated spending to cover utility costs, said the Board's associate director Carla Kisko. The money is being transferred to the Board’s Working Fund Reserve, increasing that pool of unspent cash to $23.4 million. The surplus represents a fraction of the Board’s $1-billion annual budget. Board chair Janet McDougald commended staff for showing fiscal prudence and restraint. She emphasized the Board is still in desperate need of increased provincial government funding to meet the needs of local students. Board officials contend outdated funding levels rob the Board of its fair share of provincial dollars and impact service levels in Peel. “The funding we receive is far less than we deserve,” McDougald said. Trustees have agreed to use money from the Working Fund Reserve to pay for full-day kindergarten enrollment at the schools that launched the program this year.
