Mississauga News - Feb. 25, 2010 - Letter by Jo Ann and George Hogg

Democracy suffers

Dear Editor:

In 1979, we became residents of Mississauga, a city managed by a council seemingly with vision and integrity.  Much has changed in the intervening years as the vision blurred and the integrity became suspect.

As councillors continue to squabble, our democratic system suffers.

We suggest that:

• The mayor begins grooming suitable candidates in order to facilitate a smooth transfer of leadership;

• Councillors abandon the wasteful task of financing both the prosecution and defense of those suspected of conflict of interest.

Why not a mediator and rational discussion?  If blame is established, a public apology would be sufficient.

FOR IRREFUTABLE EVIDENCE AT WHAT'S *REALLY* WRONG, you have to watch this video!

HAZEL MCCALLION/MISSISSAUGA COUNCIL DECEIVE SUB-CONTRACTORS AND PUBLIC --WITHHOLD VITAL INFORMATION) at: http://tinyurl.com/yamcmmk and face it. How you see Mississauga Council behave CAN'T be fixed because for it to get this bad, McCallion had a whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooole lot of help from Media that looked the other way.

The only thing missing in this letter is "Signed, Friends of Hazel"

I agree the Mayor should facilitate a smooth transition to a successor

Not one she chooses, however. That would be a disaster. Fortunately, I see no evidence that the Mayor gives a shippe about a successor. As far as I can tell she intends to die in office. Your second point is pretty naive. For one thing, clearly you haven't paid much attention to Council if you think a rational discussion is possible. For another, apologies for what they've perpetrated (and I mean the whole lot, not just the Mayor) are woefully inadequate. I say bring back the stocks and have the City provide lots of rotten tomatoes and eggs. That wouldn't be even close to enough, but it would be a satisfying start.
