It’s reported in The News that Phil Green, an ex-Conservative candidate, has started an online petition calling for the cancellation of the judicial inquiry that will investigate alleged conflicts of interest surrounding Mayor Hazel McCallion.
I was curious to see who would sign such a petition. Browsing through the 600 or so names at the website, I noticed that the likes of U.S. President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper have “signed” the petition. So have Prince Charles and Dutchess Camila Charles (sic).
Even fictitious characters such as the Simpsons have “signed” individually. I don’t think I saw Osama bin Ladin’s signature, but it takes time for word of the petition to reach Afghanistan.
Hilarity aside, I would like to remind my fellow citizens in Mississauga of a lengthy judicial process that McCallion and City Hall initiated some years ago against the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA). It was alleged at the time that the GTAA, which owns Pearson Airport under federal jurisdiction, ought to pay certain taxes to Mississauga.
The City lost its lawsuit and appeals. The legal cost of that exercise in futility was never divulged, but was estimated to be several million dollars.
When asked if such expenditure was justifiable, McCallion’s response was that the truth would never have been known unless the City had gone through the full judicial process.
The same rationale ought to apply now.
The mayor and her coterie of sycophants ought to accept the mandate of the judicial inquiry with grace and serenity. The citizens of Mississauga are entitled to know the truth and to expect a clean government.

Holy JUMPIN'! I just had a surf to FriendsofHazel.com! I can't WAIT for this one. If for no other reason than to confirm which rich friends can afford the MYTHissauga Convention Centre! Anyone else notice how not ONE of these Friends of Hazel actually use facts? And I love their "The Mayor is under attack by some members of City Council who want to change Mississauga." "some"? Um, isn't 7 out of 11 Councillors "most"? Anyway. Can't wait to show up and support our city. * Agree 3

Curious that the ownership of the website FriendsofHazel.com: 1) Used the international .com domain instead of Canada's .ca 2) Don't have a contact address on the page 3) Hide the administrator/owner information by registering through the American company GoDaddy instead of local operator. After all, aren't we talking about openness, fairness and transparency? * Agree 6
