Optics over ethics

At first glance, City Council’s decision to hire an integrity commissioner looks good.

And that’s what’s wrong with the idea.  It’s purely optics, window dressing designed to smooth out some nasty wrinkles at City Hall.

Given the current scandal hanging over the mayor’s office, we can’t help but think this is a classic case of closing the barn door after the horse gets away.

In this troubled economy, it doesn’t seem financially sensible to hire a $250-an hour ethics cop to keep an eye on our elected municipal officials, particularly when councillors already have decided to spend $2.5 million on a judicial inquiry to probe conflict of interest allegations against Mayor Hazel McCallion.

An integrity commissioner will ensure councillors deal with matters such as confidential information, gifts and election campaign spending in an appropriate and above-board matter.

Doesn’t the Ontario Municipal Act already cover this?  And, it’s safe to say voters expect their councillors will maintain high behavioural standards.  Can we not trust them to govern themselves?

Furthermore, it’s a silly notion to allow councillors to hire their own watchdog.  It has to be an independent position or he/she will be a $200,000 toothless tiger.

Finally, why now?  Former councillor Cliff Gyles went to jail in 2006 for taking a bribe.  Did no one think of hiring an integrity commissioner then?

Unfortunately, this idea is all show and no go.

To "ComeOn"

“COMEON”, you appear like a spin doctor from Eve Adams’ camp. My encounter with councilor Adams was only as a citizen seeking lawful intervention from her office on an issue that is still a pandemic cancer in our social fabric. And, not in any other role as YOU ASS-umed. Jihad means fight based on (blind) faith by the fanatics. Recent events prove that Hazel has fans and fanatics.

Integrity Commissioner isn't just about avoiding a Judicial Inquiry. It's to BLOCK the Ontario Ombudsman!

Hi there, ComeOn, You wrote, It was going to happen sooner or later. The Hazel minority on Council is pushing this as an alternative to the Inquiry." Actually the Hazel Minority are also pushing an Integrity Commissioner to BLOCK what surely Ontarians will eventually wake up to and realize they need --the Ontario Ombudsman having full investigative authority into municipalities. You see it isn't just Mississauga that's fussing and flapping this year about hiring an Integrity Commissioners. There's plenty of municipalities. They're scared ****less that actual Accountability may be in their Future. And then not just the LACK of "Trust, Quality, Excellence" will become apparent but also the vile degree to which Mississaugans (Ontarians and Canadians) have been duped by the "Best City in Canada" people.

The focus should be on the breaching of criminal codes that are irrelevant to preference to ones living accommodations.

From 1997 on, Mrs. McCallion led the Peel mayors to spend $66 million a year shielding themselves from removal from public office by implementing their ban on basement apartments for the soul purpose of obstructing our democratic process. The improper recording of minutes is a common play that are cultured into the provincial downloading while the $56 billion Human Services surplus (formerly the $56 billion EI surplus) caught former Federal Public Works employee, Cliff Gyles looting the till while Mrs. McCallion January 29 21,002 letter was under a Project School Board investigation

It was going to happen sooner or later

The Hazel minority on Council is pushing this as an alternative to the Inquiry. As for the crazy comments (the usual suspect) about the "Friends of Hazel" meeting might -- it might be a lot of things but undemocratic and a jihad? Grow up. Look they need to read up on the court documents and find out some facts for themselves but cut them some slack they drank the coolaid years ago. As for crusade against Councillor Adams and other writers, Tony you seem to be smarting from losing to her four years ago. Get over it! Move on with your life and out of your parent's basement.

Not the only one wrong for the committee...

Hey Tony, I think it's even more outrageous that Katie Mahoney is on that committee. Let's face it, though, there shouldn't BE a committee. There is an independent body with a proven track record that would be happy to take on the job: the Ontario Ombudsman's Office. The only reason I can see for a committee is to come up with an excuse why the Ombudsman won't do--or perhaps they'll shock me and recommend the Ombudsman. I'm not holding my breath.

LOVE YA MISSY NEWS! DEAD ON!

Wish I'd written that last part "Unfortunately, this idea is all show and no go." That should be MYTHissauga's slogan instead of Trust, Quality, Excellence (which we mercifully don't hear slung about anymor). Let's give it a try. MISSISSAUGA: ALL SHOW NO GO. (See? Perfect!)

Eve Adams is on the wrong committee….

It’s outrageous that Ward-5 councilor Eve Adams is on the committee to establish the code of conduct for members of council and to determine the mandate and duties of an integrity commissioner (M-News: Nov 18). This is like Paul Bernado introducing the law to deal with rape and murder offences. An eminent journalist, John Stewart (M-News: 20/10/06) described Eve Adams’ 2006-election campaign as “….Third World bully-boy politics….coercion of the worst kind and unforgivable of any political candidate”. Eve Adams is still the “accused” (by city officials and the media)! Let’s hope the new integrity commissioner will not be Mr. Peter Adams.

Leading today for tomorrow... down the garden path

An independent and reliable investigator is readily available to the City: the Ontario Ombudsman. In fact, in response to complaints by Donald Barber the City promised to consider using the Ombudsman. That was well over a year ago, but the "promise" vanished into the Black Hole known as Staff. I am convinced that the Mayor, the Council, and Staff are all determined to avoid any "solution" that they cannot control. The slogan "Trust, Quality, and Excellence" has never rung more hollow.

It’s the same song and spin we got from the Provincial Integrity Commissioner Gregory T Evens

The Integrity Commissioner only resolves disputes between the politicians and doesn’t give a hoot about public complaints. In reiteration to Phil Green’s petition “The gift that keeps on giving” it’s not a commission with integrity when the petitioners are using silos to extract $199,000 from our local Compass Outreach centre food bank while our councilor Pat Mullin was using it for a ribbon cutting ceremony
