Mississauga News - Nov. 2, 2009 - Running On Empty, BLOG by Bucky1 {Gerry Timbers, Managing Editor}. Local yokels First, I apologize for not updating. It's been forever. * * * Now, it's time for a rant. The only thing worse than the scandal at City Hall is being treated to the expert coverage and insight provided by our counterparts at The Toronto Star. At least they're consistent at The Star. They know what's best for us — about how we should live and what we should believe — and dang nabbit, they're not going to be shy about telling us that. No, it's The Star's obligation to guide us, the poor cousins in Mississauga, on the path to big city enlightenment. It's a modern application of the time-tested Atkinson Principles, I suppose. Fighting political injustice wherever you may find it, and pushing for reform, even in the darkest corners of the GTA. Yes, nothing less than a full-scale judicial inquiry into Mayor Hazel McCallion's dealings will do ... and let's chide and belittle the Hooterville hicks, out in the sticks, who just won't see what's obvious to any superior daily newspaper columnist worth his or her salt. I mean, there's only one way to do things. The Toronto Star way. It's like the old Chevy Chase line: "We're The Toronto Star and you're not!" I particularly enjoy how they mock the people who have been my friends and neighbours and my newspaper's readers for the past 25 years. Their crime? They're not quick or anxious to throw Hazel under the bus. Such silly small town ideals. Loyalty. That you're innocent until proven guilty. There are none so blind as those who will not see, eh? I mean, how can you trust an old lady you meet at Tim Hortons — or the local hockey arena? Or at your son's bar mitzvah? A restaurant opening? The grocery store? * * * Look, we're not simple out here in the 'burbs. We just have our own way of doing things. We're proud. And proud of our mayor. There are a lot of good people who want to see that justice is done. Just stop telling us how to FEEL about things!
