They recently packed Council Chambers to support Mayor Hazel McCallion in her fight against conflict-of-interest charges.
Now they’re taking their campaign to the community.
The group, Friends of Hazel McCallion, is holding a rally next Wednesday (Dec. 2) at the Mississauga Convention Centre, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Members are urging residents to attend.
“The mayor is under attack by some members of City Council who want to change Mississauga. They are planning to spend millions of tax dollars to further their own ambitions,” says the group in its announcement. “If they have their way, Mississauga as we know it will never be the same.”
The rally comes only weeks before a judicial inquiry that will investigate the relationship between World Class Developments and the City of Mississauga with respect to a land deal is scheduled to begin.
The mayor’s realtor son, Peter McCallion, was the broker in the developer’s failed bid to build an ambitious convention centre/hotel complex in City Centre.
Councillors initially pushed for the inquiry because the mayor failed to declare a conflict of interest when the matter came before Council for consideration.
The inquiry is estimated to cost upwards of $2.5 million and could last 40 days.
