Mississauga News - Nov. 25, 2010 - By Julie Slack - More schools could close Ten Mississauga elementary schools are on the Peel District School Board's radar for potential closure due to declining enrollment. At Tuesday's Board meeting, trustees approved the creation of the Clarkson/Erindale Accommodation Review Committee. No schools will close before September 2012. Ashgrove, Brookmede, Elmcrest, Erin Mills, Garthwood Park, Hillside, Kings Masting, Pheasant Run, Sawmill Valley and Willow Glen public schools are up for review. This is the fourth set of schools in the city to be studied via the accommodation review process in the last few years. Schools in Streetsville, Erin Mills, Port Credit and Clarkson — at both Peel and Catholic boards — have already been forced to close due to declining enrollment. Peel Board chair Janet McDougald said maximizing program opportunities for students is the main goal of the review process. "The mandate of the accommodation review committee, therefore, is to consider the enrollment of schools and identify the creative community solutions to maximize program opportunities for students with existing resources," she said. "Generally, more students at one site provide greater options and a richer experience. As such, the key filter for the accommodation review will be the improvement of program." Letters have been sent to parents of students at the identified schools. Penny Gingell, the Board's superintendent of education, will chair the committee. Principals, school council chairs, local trustee Brad MacDonald and other community members also sit on the committee, which will hold several public meetings to gather input. The Board will produce a report and a recommendation will then be made to trustees, who'll make the final call. "The review process is extensive and thorough and will take time," said Carla Kisko, the Board's associate director of operational support services. "This will allow for the Board to hear all of the community voices."
