Of all the pictures to put in why did they chose the one of me holding the by-law notice the City sent to harass my senior father?
I would like to thank those who came out to Court, to show their support and I am more sorry that I did not get the word out to all those who would have wanted to know but things did not go as planed in the last few days and what I wanted to do, just did not get done.
Roy Willis showed his support and friendship by not only not attending the Court date but not even calling ahead of time to speak to me.
Mississauga News - Nov. 5, 2007 - By ? onlinenews@mississauga.net Activist's trial gets underway
File photo Environmental activist and perenial mayoral candidate Donald Barber goes on trial today after being charged with assaulting a City Hall security guard after a council meeting in June of 2006. The trial of Mississauga political activist Donald Barber, charged with assaulting a City Hall security guard after a council meeting in June of 2006, begins this morning in Brampton.
Barber, a four-time mayoralty candidate, faces two charges of assaulting a female security guard. He has pleaded not guilty.
A charge of causing a public disturbance was withdrawn during a previous court appearance.
The trouble began for the 50-year-old environmental advocate, who founded the Friends of Cawthra Bush, when he appeared before council on June 7, 2006 to protest an apparent change in a long-standing policy that resulted in restrictions on citizens wanting to question politicians during meetings.
Barber and Roy Willis, who also challenged Mayor Hazel McCallion for her job in the subsequent municipal election, protested the policy change.
When Barber left the meeting, he was followed by two security guards. The assault is alleged to have occurred a short time later.
As a condition of his bail, Barber has been unable to attend City Hall or council meetings since his arrest. He says the charges are politically motivated because of his outspoken criticism of McCallion and the council she leads.
