Mississauga News - Oct. 28, 2010 - By Residents fear traffic problems at new school Lakeview residents got a progress report on a brand-new elementary school being built in their area, and the main topic of discussion – not surprisingly – was traffic concerns. The new kindergarten to Grade 5 school will replace the existing Lyndwood school at 498 Hartsdale Ave., and will house students from Byngmount Beach, Lyndwood and Neil C. Matheson. Grades 6-8 from Byngmount and Lynwood will go to Allan A. Martin Sr. P.S. The decision to build a new school comes in the wake of an Accommodation Review Committee's (ARC) process that reviewed four schools from Lakeview for consolidation because of declining enrollments. While no one commented on the facility’s design, since it has already been used in more than a dozen Peel District School Board (PDSB) schools, residents who attended a public meeting tonight at the Mississauga Seniors’ Centre, had plenty to say about traffic flow. Most were concerned the new school, with a projected enrollment of 477 students, will exacerbate traffic problems around Hartsdale Ave., which feeds into the school, and nearby Arbor Rd. “I’m not opposed to a school, but I’m clearly opposed to a site plan that (gives) one point of access to two schools,” said an exasperated resident. “It’s going to be a nightmare,” said another, asking for a traffic study. Others wondered why Orano Ave., which dead ends at the west side of the property, couldn’t be punched through to connect with Hartsdale Ave. to allow traffic to enter and exit at different points. But officials nixed the idea, saying a thorough street would be unsafe because some motorists would use it as a short cut. PDSB officials also noted that only two to four school buses are projected. Other students will walk to the school, while the rest will kiss-and-ride. The new school is scheduled to open next September. Officials, however, said that would be contingent on the old school being demolished by Christmas.
