Photo demeaning to McCallion Re:A sad picture of wilting glory, Oct. 3 Mean and nasty! Your coverage of Mayor Hazel McCallion's conflict-of-interest case was utterly ruthless and bitter, right from the negative headline to the callous extreme close-up. I have never lived in Mississauga, but have long admired and respected Hazel McCallion. She has always been outspoken, has answered media and political opponents straightforwardly. Since she had declared a conflict of interest when the question of zoning came up, and since there is little doubt that parties involved and most voters in Mississauga knew Peter McCallion was her son, and that he was in business there, should she really be expected to remind the councillors at every meeting? Would that corporations be held to the same standard. You have performed merciless and disgraceful character assassination of a woman with a hitherto unblemished reputation for honesty and openness throughout a 30-year career in politics. You should be heartily ashamed. Shirley Bush, Toronto How dare you print that undignified picture of Hazel McCallion, one of southern Ontario's finest politicians with an unmatched track record for accomplishments and longevity. Certainly you have a better file photo in your archives. Sharlene Shaw, Toronto Rarely have I witnessed such a vicious and demeaning photograph accompanied by an equally spiteful and derogatory headline. Whoever okayed this photo is complicit in the debasement of a woman who, to many people, is the embodiment of an indomitable human spirit.
