Well, well - one of the Peel polices biggest media supporters lines it out - the Peel police are broken and to repair the damage to public trust will be a huge undertaking. What is really sad it that it only notes a couple of cases when there are some many more! Maybe charge should really begin at the top - oh sorry this is Canada, the commander & Chief must be unaccountable for the actions of those under his command and keep them on the straight & narrow. Some would say that his "job" is to keep them honest and doing the job they were hired to do, but hay those are only words, not binding over these gun carrying Canadian bureaucrats. We should know by now to expect nothing more then they will do as they please, when they please. Mississauga News - May 18-07 - Editorial Police Tarnish Image The Peel Regional Police should be ashamed of themselves. The activities described in the two stories on the front page of today's edition put the entire department in a bad light. They have also planted the seeds mistrust into the residents of Mississauga. Police are usually on the giving end of lecturers, but now is the time for them to sit back and hear one for a change. Peel Police have a long and proud tradition of providing upstanding service. It is a reputation earned through hard work and honour. But the deeds of officers that came before mean nothing if today's rank and file cannot exceed the standards that have been set before them. They can not command respect if they are not willing to give it. The admission by some that they used seized alcohol for their own purposes is a sad truth. So is the number of people involved in their beer bash. Even more significant is the judgement of the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario that now requires Peel Police to develop policies prohibiting racial profiling. Some will say we are chastising all officers for the misdeeds of a few, but in this case it is fair commentary because too many must know this type of behaviour exists. How can they not know? Until Peel Regional Police acknowledge these problems and move to correct them, it will have a hard time winning back public support.
