Controversies galore in Mississauga's McCallion inquiry
By a unanimous vote — something that’s as rare in Mississauga as a crowded transit bus — council has agreed to pay the legal costs of both Mayor Hazel McCallion and her son Peter, each up to $100,000.
That’s just one of the controversies rolling around as the judicial inquiry into the city’s acquisition of about 8.5 acres of land worth almost $15 million in a development deal that involved her son and led to questions about a potential conflict of interest for the mayor nears.
Council opening their wallets to the McCallion family — it’s groundbreaking for, Peter, a third party not related to the city, to be funded by taxpayers — has raised the ire of some Mississaugans.
Peter McCallion still has to prove he does not have the financial wherewithal to pay the bills himself, a fact assumed by most.
Still, even Coun. Carolyn Parrish, the mayor’s prime adversary, was in favour.
“I have no problem with that,” Parrish said in the Mississauga News. “She’s obviously not being accused of anything and I don’t think she’s the focus of the hearing.”
She actually said that without piercing the skin of her cheek with her tongue.
The third party requesting financial assistance was OMERS, the mammoth municipal pension plan. Parrish wasn’t so warm and fuzzy with that concept.
“OMERS, I wouldn’t give them one damn cent. They don’t fit the criteria,” she said.
OMERS bid rejected
The criteria being they can afford to take care of themselves. OMERS bid for funding was rejected.
What is disturbing the citizens is why taxpayers are covering the mayor and her son, when no one pays their legal costs?
Quite simply no one involved in this inquiry has been charged with any crime. It’s not a criminal trial, but rather a judicial investigation, and at the end of the inquiry there will be no guilty or not guilty verdict handed out; just some red faces and perhaps damaged reputations.
So couldn’t you make an argument that because it’s not a legal trial and because the inquiry comes at the behest of council, if you cover one person’s costs the same rules should apply for all who’ve been asked to participate?
Legal counsel for OMERS suggests the money spent on their defence in fact belongs to their members.
Coun. Katie Mahoney believes if the city paid, “It would be taxpayers’ money, and I represent the interests of the taxpayer.”
The wicked irony, or even conflict, as some suggest, is all of Mississauaga’s councillors have a share in the OMERS pension plan.
Billing overseen
Justice Douglas Cunningham, who will preside over the inquiry, has appointed a well respected and veteran solicitor to oversee the legal disbursements. Those will be regulated by specific criteria such as limiting legal counsel to attending hearings when their clients’ interests are engaged and not otherwise. In other words, no hanging around looking for extra billing time.
Their hourly rate will vary from $75 for articling students to $325 per hour for counsel with 20-plus years experience.
The lawyer charged with this task is William Woloshyn, whose name caused Coun. Parrish to ask, “Is he related to Ted Woloshyn?”

The answer is no, we are not related, and you’re being more than a little rude in suggesting it would matter to a man with an impeccable reputation in the legal community.
And by the way, the other day Joseph Estate Winery introduced the Hazel Heritage Wine which will support her Arts Foundation.

To blame Hazel or her son for asking for their legal fees to be paid is ridiculous.
The fact is, Parrish arranged for this little witch hunt at the expense of taxpayers. So, why should Hazel, her son, or anyone REQUIRED to participate have to pay their own legal costs ? They didn't ask for this, Parrish and her band of followers did.
To Parrish and her ilk. We know who you are. Come next election, you can count on us making your campaigns HELL. We'll be at EVERY function you appear at asking you embarrassing questions in front of the media and citizens. You better make sure ALL of your skeletions are out before cause we are actively looking for them .
You will NOT be re-elected after we get through with you.

Why is any one surprised that the city has to pay legal fees?
If they city decided not to cover any legal cost, the inquiry judge would have stepped in.
Oh, and the statement that Ms. Parrish seems to keep using "it's not about the mayor"
cut the crap, she has always wanted to " knock her off her pedestal" if she (Ms P) reads this,
those words might sound familiar, and the saga continues.......like a soap opera, there is more to come.

I still cannot believe that part of Mississauga is stupid enough to have elected Carolyn Parrish the first time and they did it again (at 2 levels of government) That part of the city must have IQ's lower than their neck size. This bitch has never contributed anything positive to anything. Her name should be parasite instead of Parrish. But politician is the only job she is qualified for. She would be unemployable in any other. She isn't nice enough to be a greeter at WalMart.

This is getting ridiculous..
First Parrish orchestrates an inquiry for $2.5 MILLION PLUS PLUS ( just wait and see )
Now she says I'm not frugal any more.. keep the money tap flowing .. I see this as trying to get on the good side of Mayor Hazel.. just in case .. know what I mean
And then she says no way to OMERS because she doesn't like them .. Hmmmmm,,, don't you (Karolina) have a pension coming from them eventually ??? conflict ? besides the FAT $75000 annually that you are already receiving from the Federal trough?
And then questions names / relationships re Woloshyn ??
How about her son-in law working for Councillor Carlson.

"Council opening their wallets to the McCallion family"... Scuse me pal, but thats MY WALLET they are "opening up" and I am getting sick and tired of it. Maybe they don't notice what life is really like here outside the dome.
It's not just Toronto's voters getting fed up. Since this crippling recession rolled in people have been paying a hell of a lot more attention. The same cannot be said of our elected officials. You are giving away cash that thousands do not have. Your largesse on my dime is digusting and I am not alone in that sentiment. There will be some shake ups going on in many Municipalities this year as the taxpayer has finally had enough of taking it up the hoop while you spend spend spend. No more!

Ya know what? I am soooooo sick ad f**king tired of funding stinking politicians at every damned level. You got legal woes? open your own damned wallet and pay for it like the rest of us do in the real world. If you kept your damned noses clean there would not be a problem would there.
They all end up feeding on the taxpayers carcass. The whole deal with Hazels son stinks from the bottom up. It's obvious he was using moms postion and clout to make a tidy profit. Well my boy, pay your own damned way, and if you can't try Legal Aid... NOT MY POCKETS..Low life.
