– July 22 2000, Sat. - by Province-owned wells show contamination Toronto -- A startling 60 per cent of the water wells tested thus far on government-owned land in Ontario have tested positive for E. coli, parasites and excessive minerals, the Ontario Realty Corporation said yesterday. The agency that manages Ontario's land and property ordered tests of its 350 wells in June as a precaution after the E. coli-related deaths of seven people in Walkerton. The private wells are not part of the public water system, and mainly serve farms and residential buildings. Judith Baird, a spokeswoman for the corporation, said it's impossible to tell whether contamination levels in wells have grown worse because testing is not mandatory. All residents using wells on Crown land will get free bottled water. CP
