The Mississauga News - Apr 28-06 - Editorial Mayor needs a driver This is not a matter of ageism; As mayor of Canada's sixth largest city, Hazel McCallion has repeatedly shown she has the stamina and ability to keep on top of the matters that her job entails. She will be validated again this fall when she will be most likely re-elected by a wide margin. But, with the demands her role as mayor brings, it's time for McCallion to admit she needs some help: She needs a chauffeur. From her standpoint, the mayor does not want to lose the independence of coming and going as her schedule dictates. And sure, as citizens, there is a certain small town charm to see her behind the wheel of her own vehicle as she travels around town going to and from meetings and other functions. That was what she was doing late Wednesday when she was travelling alone late at night, coming from a police awards banquet. While she officially had started the day off with a council meeting at 9 a.m., her routine started hours earlier with a number of meetings and preparation work. That is a long, tiring day by anyone's standards. Most mayors of her status have drivers and her colleagues on council have been urging to do the same. It makes sense, and it would be one less thing she would have to worry about. It may not even come at a cost as there are probably willing volunteers. The only person that has to be convinced is Her Worship herself.
