Opening comments: More at the end. Only letter in support of Hazel McCallion continuing to drive herself around, was from Victoria, B.C., long ways to go - eh? Guess all the locals know better.
Toronto Star - Apr. 29, 2006 - letter - In regards to "Should Hazel still be driving?" Hazel singled out because of her age - April 28. Why would anyone question if Mayor Hazel McCallion should be driving? Thousands of people are involved in automobile collisions each year, just ask insurance companies. No one questions them. Hazel is singled out because of her age and public prominence. If her driving record has been good over the last 65 years, accord her the same respect you would any other driver. The ability to get in your own vehicle and go where you want, when you please, means you are independent. You do not lose a right that leads to a loss of that independence and hence diminishes your quality of life, based on uninformed judgments. I am ashamed that the question was even asked, and even more disappointed that the Star would legitimize the question by devoting an article to it. By John Amon, Victoria, B.C.
