Page - - Mississauga News, Jan. 11/98 Expert Coming to talk the talk on salamanders One of Ontario's foremost experts on salamanders and amphibians is giving a free talk in Mississauga Jan. 29 on amphibians in urban woodlands. Dr. Jim Bogart, professor of zoology at Guelph University, has been invited to give the talk by Mississauga's Urban Forest Management Advisory Committee (UFMAC). "UFMAC is looking at expanding its role to provide more educational opportunities," says Laura Piette of the City's community services department. "They'd like to educate the community on the factors that affect the woodlands," she adds. The committee's main role has been to advise council on management plans which axe being developed for each of the municipality's woodlots. Since a provincially-rare variety of salamander has been discovered at the Cawthra Bush, "they thought this would be a nice subject to start with," says Piette of the lecture on amphibians. The public will be asked to comment on the evening and will be asked to fill out comment cards indicating what other topics they may be interested in. There seems to be a lot of interest in different aspects of the habitat of local woodlots, including snakes, animals and birds, Piette says. Bogart, who has a PhD in biology from the College of Botanical Science, will be speaking Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Noel Ryan Auditorium at the Central Library, 301 Burnhamthorpe Rd. W.
