Opening comments:  More at the end.

Sounds soviet style and from the pen of Hazel, to rewrite history to justify the unjustifiable.  Media telling people what to think is bad enough but in this case it is sickening.  Why were there questions raised?

Part of the 1988 Mississauga election & the strange and troubling case of Stephen Morgan.  This one is a real eye opener and makes you wonder why no legal action was taken or even suggested.

Sound advice

The young Erin Mills resident who was Hazel McCallion's only challenger in the mayoral race did the right thing when he reconsidered.

Just minutes before the deadline that would have locked him into a head-to-head battle with the otherwise uncontested mayor, Stephen Morgan withdrew his nomination, a decision he reached after consulting with friends, family and at least one other “adviser .”

While Morgan's interest in local politics and his desire to work on behalf of Mississauga residents is admirable, his timing was misguided.

Opportunities to contribute abound within this city and the region.  Hundreds of charitable, educational and municipal organizations are desperately seeking the kind of commitment Morgan seems willing to demonstrate.

Whether or not Morgan's motives in announcing his intention to challenge Hazel McCallion were purely altruistic (few are), he couldn't expect this city's voters to place their faith in an entirely untested, barely initiated candidate to lead their community through an unprecedented period of growth.

Morgan says he will be back in three years (older, wiser, better informed and financially backed).  Add to that a solid record of commitment and contribution and he might prove a viable candidate in 1991.

Morgan has no doubt heard these and similar refrains many times in the past 48 hours, both from his friends and from John Keyser, a lawyer of unquestioned honor and reputation in our city. [1]

But whether wearing the cap of an unbiased, interested resident willing to share his perspectives and experience with a novice political candidate, or that of a “friend and supporter” of the mayor's, Keyser's opinion obviously made a significant impact on Morgan.

And while his intervention may not be entirely palatable, the advice he offered was sound.

[COMMENTS BY DON B. -

[1] - "unquestioned honor"?  I question that and say it end the day this "“friend and supporter” of the mayor's", gave such counsel as to motive a candidate in an election to withdraw their candidacy.    ]
