City approves funeral home

Plans to build a funeral home on the site of the former Malton branch of the Royal Canadian Legion were given the green light Wednesday by City council.

City of Mississauga councillors voted unanimously in favour of allowing the owner of the building -- the site is located at 3263 Derry Rd. E., just west of Goreway Dr. -- to rezone the property.

The rezoning application was at the centre of a Peel Regional Police investigation earlier this year.

Police allege Ward 5 Councillor Cliff Gyles, who declared a conflict and did not cast a vote, demanded $100,000 from the property owner in return for helping to pave the way for construction of the funeral home.

The property owner contacted police in January and an investigation was launched.

Gyles was arrested Feb. 19 -- the same night on which a public meeting relating to the application took place -- and charged with municipal corruption, breach of trust and frauds against the government.

He spent four days in jail before being released on bail Feb. 23.

Gyles is scheduled to appear in Brampton court again July 27.
