July 20, 2001 - Mississauga News - By DEENA THAKIB Gyles faces new charges Mississauga Ward 5 Councillor Cliff Gyles, already facing charges of municipal corruption, was arrested Wednesday by Peel Police on new charges of perjury and fraud. Gyles turned himself in to police after being told to do so by investigators with the Fraud Bureau who have laid five charges against him. They allege Gyles applied for a refund from the provincial government in May, 2000 for his present home by misrepresenting himself as a first-time homeowner. Other charges stem from an unsuccessful attempt to obtain a mortgage through fraudulent means. Police said Gyles was successful at obtaining the mortgage from a financial institution. Wednesday Gyles was granted $75,000 bail with strict conditions that prevent him from performing his duties as a Mississauga and Peel Region councillor. He is not permitted to attend Mississauga City Hall or Peel Region offices in Brampton or to go anywhere in the province where there are committee meetings associated with the duties of a municipal or regional councillor. Gyles is permitted to attend council meetings only for the purpose of having his name identified on record to preserve his position as councillor, in accordance with the Municipal Act. In February, police charged Gyles with demanding a $100,000 payoff from a local businessman in exchange for "political influence on a pending property zoning application." The property owner had wanted approval to build a funeral home on 3263 Derry Rd. E., just west of Goreway Dr. Gyles was charged Wednesday with fraud under $5,000, attempt to obtain credit by fraud, obtain credit by fraud, two counts of perjury and utter forged document. He is scheduled to appear in Brampton court again on July 27. Mayor Hazel McCallion said she would assume the duties of Ward 5 councillor until the outcome of the case. Outside the courtroom, Gyles' family members were visibly upset by the media's presence. Peel Police Fraud Bureau investigators, who carried out the separate probe, allege that Gyles applied for a refund from the provincial government in May, 2000 for his present home by misrepresenting himself as a first-time homeowner. Gyles will also continue to keep his passport on deposit with police. City of Mississauga officials have not released an official statement, but say they will continue to co-operate with police in any ongoing investigations.
