Hearings to begin in April

Cliff Gyles made a brief appearance in Brampton court Tuesday where Justice Hugh Atwood declared preliminary hearings into the Ward 5 councillor's case, which includes 12 charges of municipal corruption, fraud and perjury, will be heard in the week of April 15-19 of next year.

Gyles, 57, arrived in court with his wife Inez by his side.

Outside the courtroom, Gyles, wearing a navy blue suit with a blue and silver tie, socialized with court staff and routinely chuckled with his wife.

"We're always in good spirits, and we will continue to be in good spirits," Inez told The News.

Gyles was initially charged with municipal corruption, breach of trust and fraud against the government.

But on July 18, he was arrested a second time and charged with several counts of fraud and two counts of perjury.

Peel Regional Police allege Gyles demanded a $100,000 payoff from a local businessman last February in exchange for political influence on a pending property zoning application.

The property owner was seeking to build a funeral home in Malton. The rezoning application was approved by council early this summer.
