The Toronto Sun  - Oct. 29 1982  - By John Downing

HIS Spell is broken ...

Bruce Melanson is distributing a card in Etobicoke's Ward 4 saying people should vote for him because he will be an "intellegent" alderman.

He should have picked a qualification he could spell.  This may be the only time you read about him, which is just about the right exposure.

Are we going to let Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and supporters get away with the outlandish suggestion that recent court events were only minor technicalities?

Let's examine the molehill and see if it really isn't a mountain calling for her defeat.

McCallion once headed an organization that gave important advice to the provincial government on Municipal Conflict-of-Interest Act.

Despite that and her years of experience, a county judge found she had broken that act in every possible way when the issue was one of the most important matters before her council for years.

Judge Ernest West said she made a "substantial error in judgment . . ." and made her pay all court costs.

In a later hearing, he complained about her failure to admit "early in the proceedings allegations which ultimately were not in issue.”  He also criticized her fighting a finding which he thought was the only one that could be made.

I revealed she was a director of a land development company which made a huge profit on just one land deal in Mississauga.

During examination-for-discovery in the conflict case, her lawyer directed her not to answer questions about that company or whether she owned land in Mississauga in addition to the family home and five acres which was included in an area approved for development against officials’ recommendations.

Another disturbing thing that surfaced in the case was just how this council handled the start of the processing of a fortune in residential land.

The council majority fought over it in secret, amended what the officials wanted  in secret, put together the winning motion in secret, and only then listened to the public.

I'm glad I don't live there.  I suggest that if you do,  you. think twice, or maybe a hundred times, about re-electing councillors who conduct your business in such a sloppy,  secret way.

Memo to Ald. Tom Clifford: I know how busy you are on Gerrard St. hiding candidates' signs behind your signs in windows.  You may have missed this.

George Vlahos, an aldermanic candidate in East York’s Ward 3,  has your name under a picture in his literature.  Trouble is, it's not you in the photo.  Is this something new in endorsements?

Vlahos' brochure is mostly pictures, including a big shot with Bob Elgie that consumes more space than anything he has to say on policy.

That's the "who-you-know" school of politics.  I still like the "what-you-say" school.

One candidate in the same ward, Anna Sideris, was heard from last year in the provincial election when she ran for the Communist Party.  She doesn't seem to be flying party colors this time, which disturbs some people.

But probably the biggest fuss over what has been left out of literature comes from Parkdale, where Caroline Trollope is running for Ward 2 trustee.  She was the darling of those who dislike incumbents Sheila Meagher and Beare Weatherup.

Other trustees fighting the NDP were behind her, attracted by her claim to have had national exposure in school and mental health issues.

She really hasn't had such exposure, but she did achieve minor notoriety as a national spokesman for the Church of Scientology under her married name, Caroline Charbonneau.

Now the fighting among the anti-New Democrats concerns whether they despise Meagher enough to support a Scientologist.
