Mississauga News - Aug 13, 2009 - Letter by Ian L. Smith.

Politician’s nightmare

Dear Editor:        Re: Councillor slams questioner, The News, Aug. 7.

So after all that, Council has deferred any decision on the contentious public question period.

Why?

What are they waiting for?  It’s Council that’s in conflict with its own bylaw, not the citizen.

Councillor Nando Iannicca’s verbal assault against Hamilton-Smith’s right of free association and, at a previous Council meeting, Mayor McCallion’s castigation of Don Barber’s right of free speech, are symptomatic of the mayor and councillors’ unwillingness to be held accountable for this debacle of their own making.

One could express an opinion to the mayor or ward councillor, but it may be treated as confidential.  Whereas in writing, telephoning or e-mailing one’s views and opinions to the City clerk, they become a matter of public record.

It appears it’s true that a politician’s worst nightmare is an informed citizen.

The Iannicca Banality Scale

I’ve reviewed the instant replay on Andrews Smith’s Facebook several times and it’s a worse nightmare for the citizens, like myself , Don Barber, Antonio Baptistsa and now whole party affiliation to be pre judged by a self regulated closed door meeting specifically set up to promote willful hatred.

Mr. Smith: I see you're familiar with our Muse.

Special thanks to Ian Smith especially for raising a VITAL POINT

To citizens, especially Youth who have a concern/complaint about the City of Mississauga: If you want your correspondence kept confidential, then yes, email Mayor and Councillors only. BUT --if you believe other citizens may benefit from your words or you just want your concern for the public record, Mr. Smith is correct. Make sure you cc the City Clerk! Many of my emails begin with "[cc: to City Clerk. DO NOT ERASE. I WISH THIS TO BE A PUBLIC DOCUMENT WITH OPEN ACCESS TO ANYONE REQUESTING THIS THROUGH FREEDOM OF INFORMATION. OPEN ACCESS INCLUDES MY CONTACT INFORMATION AS WELL AS MY NAME] It won't help with accountability, but other citizens can document how your complaints were ignored (which I've confirmed on behalf of others through Freedom of Information). And whatever you do, DO NOT USE Public.Info@mississauga.ca! City Staff can (and will!) hide their identities when they write back!
