Sock puppets Dear Editor:When I read Cheryl Glassford’s letter to you as a response to, “an editorial in The Mississauga News about the disintegration of morale in our city council,” I was appalled that someone could express such strong opinion based on no apparent facts. Glassford writes, “I have been a resident of Mississauga since 1980 and have always been proud of Mayor (Hazel) McCallion and the job she has done for us.” Well, I have been a resident of Mississauga since 1953 and I used to be proud of Mayor McCallion, too. Then I found out what really goes on. It doesn’t matter who sits in the mayor’s/councillors’ chairs. You could replace them with sock puppets. It’s City staff who call the shots. For years Canadians have been treated like mushrooms by the media and love being told they live in the best place in the world, no questions asked. However, those who have made the effort to become informed discovered they are living in a fantasy world. Those who make this effort should be seen as spacial and if they try to tell others, HEROES. I call say without fear of being proven wrong that Ursala is just such a hero, we should all be proud of, having Mississauga. She does not base her opinion on her opinion, it is on documents and dtails supplied by other informed participants. How bad are our politicians. Documents show a secret trail, a secret City security program and the Mayor saying a COUP out to get her. Because YOU don't file Freedom of Information! Ms. Glassford, you asked, "Who do you think hires the City Manager? " The Hire is a combo of both Staff recommendations and approval by Mayor/Council. In unscrupulous municipalities, City Managers are hired based primarily on how well Mayors/Councillors think they will make them look good (not necessarily serve the Public which is a different thing entirely). You asked, “Who do you think makes certain that the City Manager preserves the services and programs that make our City stand out?” Ahem! What “preserves the services and programs”? These are cut back CONSTANTLY with each passing Budget year! But City employee salaries, benefits AND pensions are preserved! You should know. Your husband was a City employee -recently retired after 34 years? You then asked, “Please, who is really short on facts?” You are woman, you are. There is zero accountability, partly because to have accountability you need an informed electorate.
