Mississauga News - Sept. 21, 2010 - By John Stewart - jstewart@mississauga.net

Candidates challenge Mayor

Showdown.
Mayoral candidates (from left) Donald Barber, Bryan Hallett and George Winter
will hold a press conference on Thursday to challenge Mayor Hazel McCallion to a televised debate.

Three of the 16 mayoralty candidates running against Mayor Hazel McCallion will hold a press conference on Thursday to challenge her to a televised debate.

In a press release today, Donald Barber, Bryan Hallett and George Winter say that as "Mississauga sleepwalks through another election," they want all 17 mayoral candidates to debate the issues at a televised all-candidates' debate.

"All candidates, including the current mayor, should be willing to display their vision for the future and/or their views of the Mississauga that we see today," said the three mayoralty candidates, who called themselves An Alliance For The Common Cause.

"We need a detailed platform and vision for the people for the next four years," they said.

They're hoping that Rogers Cable 10 will host the debate. Among the issues they say should be addressed are taxation, public transit and accountability at City Hall.

The candidates have called the press conference for 10 a.m. on the steps of the Living Arts Centre.

You wrote, "Hazel deliberately smeared the 7 councillors that went against her on the inquiry!" Not to mention she's cookin' this election.

You claim to be for democracy. WHat is more demopcratic than freedom of speech. Yet you knowingly try to censor comment by making offensive. How sad.

But who'll pay for the poor man's wardrobe. After all, he has none. Isn't that why he tried to video the inquiry?

I used to think along your lines, why waste the electorate's time with fringe candidates, but you know what? i'm thinking the best thing may be to have Barber exposed to the City so everyone can see how silly (I'm feeling congenial tonight) he is. Hopefully he won't wuss out and will repeat in front of the whole City what he has on his website and if he doesn't the moderator should tackle it "Mr. Barber, your website mocks the Mayor's wardrobe, you call her a clown, can you explain yourself and who dresses you?" Should be both entertaining and good for another point or two in the Mayor's favour. LEt Barber debate I say!!!

Not Fair Play

Hazel deliberately smeared the 7 councillors that went against her on the inquiry ! They to take an oath of office...and without integrity...they don't have much. This is not the first time for Hazel to get nabbed with her hand in the cookie jar?! If they sat back and said nothing....then what good would they be runnung a ward?

Fringe Candidates

Why debate fringe candidates who have so little support that they could all pretty much fit all of their voters into a single auditorium? Donald Barber aka Council Chamber Benny Hill is a joke. The man runs in every election and never manages more than a few % of the vote - no doubt most of which comes from people who mismarked their ballot. I have to wonder if he is so poor that he can't afford cable TV how can he afford to run for mayor? Perhaps poverty was just an excuse to get out of trobule for illegally video-taping the inquiry in direct violation of a judges order. I don't know anything about the other two but by mixing themselves up with a wacko like Barber, they give up a lot of credibility.

@msm: Your understanding of the way the succession proceeds is incorrect

If the Mayor's office becomes vacant the Council has two choices: appoint a successor or call a special election. Section 259(1)(h) of the Municipal Act means that this applies as soon as polls close on Election day. If a candidate dies or become ineligible before the close of voting, the name is removed from the ballot. If it is too late to prepare new ballots. notices are posted at polling stations and votes for that candidate are ignored. That's the only way the second place finisher could replace the winner of an election.

In a perfect world there wouldn't be developers like Harold Shipp who threaten councillors tho vote a certain way!

"If I were sitting there among you, Ladies and Gentlemen, who serve on our Council today, I would be wondering what my position would be one year from now when an election is held and how many of you might have a chance for re-election —IF you proceed with the action you are contemplating now." --Harold Shipp (October 28, 2009)

In a perfect world

In a perfect world, Mississauga news would commission a poll that ascertains voter awareness of mayoral choices. In a perfect world, Mississauga News would do a feature series on each of the mayoral candidates. Well, in a truly perfect world, Mississauga News would work with Toronto Star (how is that for thinking outside the box?) to do a detail breakdown of the issues faced by Mississaugans, their mayoral options and have the locals speak their frustrations. Ahhh if only there could be a perfect world. Wait a minute... dare we dream? dare we demand?

Bravo!

@Fartleberry - The main reason people don't know about alternatives is a lack of media coverage. I would like to see The Mississauga News do what The Toronto Star does so well - a full page or two featuring *ALL* mayoral candidates and their platforms. Mississaugans cannot afford to be complacent because the law of the land states that if a serving mayor cannot fulfill his or her term, the candidate who finished second automatically fills the post.

Really George, a coalition with Barber?

I didn't think Winter was the best candidate, but I thought he would at least be credible, but he now announces an alliance with Barber? The same Barber whose website resorts to childish name calling and personal attacks? I wonder if winter has ever seen the website. Think I'll send him a link and see if he's still in the alliance mood

Kudos to Barber, Hallett and Winter

For pushing past the damning testimony at the inquiry and doing what's in the best interests of the citizens of Mississauga. An all-candidates debate, each providing their vision of the future. Brialliant! An Alliance for the Commmon Cause. Three Cheers for you Three! BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!
