Mayor challenged to TV debate

Mayor Hazel McCallion’s election foes are ramping up the pressure on the 11-term incumbent to declare her platform.

And, while she’s at it, McCallion should agree to participate in a good, old-fashioned televised debate, they say.

“As citizens, we have the right to call out (McCallion) to an all-mayoral candidate meeting to get her to present a detailed campaign platform in a televised debate to know what her intentions are and to see where she stands on the important issues facing Mississauga,” Bryan Hallett said outside the Living Arts Centre, just a stone’s throw from McCallion’s City Hall office, this morning.

He was joined by two more of the 17 mayoral hopefuls — George Winter and Donald Barber.

“The fact that mayoral candidates in Canada’s sixth-largest city have to hold a press conference to call for a televised debate speaks volumes,” said Winter.

Referring to Toronto Mayor David Miller’s use of a broom to symbolize the sweeping out of the whole regime, Winter quipped that “in Mississauga, we would need a street sweeper.”

Barber, who has run for the mayor’s office four previous times, said there’s a “crisis of confidence and credibility” in the city.

Because of that, “informed citizens rightfully question the true state of affairs in City Hall and why they should be expected to blindly trust Team McCallion and vote her in for another four years of the same old, same old,” he said.

McCallion has been pleading with voters to give her a council she can work with.

It appears Hallett, Barber and Winter aren’t alone in being dissatisfied with McCallion.

“She hasn’t released a platform. There’s absolutely no vision for the next four years.  How are we supposed to have a democratic back-and-forth so voters know where she stands on issues?” said another mayoral hopeful, Ram Selvarajah, at his campaign launch last week.

Asked the same day if she would run any type of campaign, McCallion said:  “I am not running a campaign.  I run a campaign every day.  I don’t want to waste money on signs and literature.”

Told that her opponents are complaining about the lack of debate on the issues, McCallion said:  “Whatever’s arranged by the citizens and the ratepayers’ groups, I’ll be there.  I’ll be glad to debate.”

Those arguing for a more detailed vision from McCallion point to several issues that loom on the city’s horizon:  After decades of massive growth, Mississauga’s debt-free status could be over by 2012 unless taxes are drastically hiked; development dollars are drying up, with little open land left; and public transit is struggling to meet demand.

MIRANET, an umbrella group representing a number of Mississauga residents’ associations, has been having discussions with Rogers TV on televising an all-candidates forum.

“We are not yet in a position to announce the date, as we are awaiting confirmation from Mayor McCallion that she would be able to attend one of the possible dates we have suggested.  We are planning to provide a moderated format that will allow for serious discussion and debate on several key themes affecting the future of our city,” said MIRANET spokesperson Dorothy Tomiuk.

Did he make reference made to the night Mayor1 car was wisked all the way to a London wrecker after she drove into the centre lane post? No pictures allowed but police friends know where car went that night after Miss Convention Centre serious accident. Thank God no one was hurt or killed. Information with truth are not attacks are they?

don't know if you are Barber or a wanabee posing, but either way to defend the vicious and personal attacks on the Mayor that show up on that poor excuse for a website shows how truly sad you are. Again for anyone who missed it here is what passes as constructive debate in Barber's mind...disgusting .http://the-democratic-reporter.com/mayor-of-mississauga/Hazel_McCallion_Drunk_Driver_Quotes.htm http://the-democratic-reporter.com/PERSONS_D-R/P-DATA_D-R/HAZEL_McCALLION_D-R/HAZEL_McCALLION_DYING.HTM http://the-democratic-reporter.com/mayor-of-mississauga/Hazel_McCallions_CLOWN_Get-UP.htm

Posting some interesting facts.

Have just got a page up about the news conference so Mississaugans can get the facts. mayor-of-mississauga.com/Sept_23-10_Press_conference.htm And what is really interesting is that the media were the first to ask questions about Hazels health and age this time around - I was just ahead of my time in 2006. The recordings are posted and people on the street also agree, she has had her chance - new blood. mayor-of-mississauga.com/Media_asks_common_sense_questions_about_Hazels_health-age.htm

@missy2

I DO denounce his attacks on the Mayor. They're unreasonable and exaggerated. This has nothing to do with your challenge, I have felt this way for a long time and have said as much in the past.

You are a joke. That's like saying you know that David Duke had some great ideas, it's too bad he was a member of the KKK. But because he had some great ideas, I can't condemn him. But how about we compromise. Say that you denounce his personal attacks on the mayor but you like the other stuff. I keep giving you outs but you just keep digging yourself deeper.

Oh really? I can't support some views and disagree with others? Does this only apply to Donald Barber or do I have to do that with everyone? Is this how you run your own life? Do you realize how silly you just made yourself look? You run around posting fallacies so that you can attack them and I point that out, so tell me again how I don't know what a strawman is?

@ CR

To add a little levity to this, he seems obsessed with how the Mayor dresses as you can see in one of the links. Elsewhere on his site, he shows the picture of the Mayor and criticizes her for wearing the same dress a few days earlier. Now, I only noticed earlier today but every picture I see of him in a suit from 2006 to 2010, looks like he's in the same suit, shirt and tie! Funny or sad, i don't know?

First of all, you have no idea what a "strawman" is but keep using the term. I don't have the time to teach you. You can't pick what you like about Barber and ignore the rest. He is running for MAyor, so his all his views matter. Now Muse has already declared herself a Barberite, but you still have a chance. Say that you disagree with these disgusting posts or prove that you are a Barberite .

Look! Strawman! Attack! Attack!

The only support ever expressed here for Donald Barber has been either for his environmental work, or for his fight against the fraudulent charges brought against him by the City of Mississauga. The idea that anyone here, or Winter or Hallett for that matter, has supported the claims on his website or his campaign for mayor is, like almost everything spewed out by missy2, a straw man: made up for the purpose of attacking.

See the real Barber in his own words

Questions about candidate Barber’s comments posted on his website, links below: does this befit a mayoralty candidate, is this the “constructive” debate he wants to have, are personal/ petty attacks what Mississaugans want, is this “community service”, do candidates Allett and Winter support their “coalition” partner’s views, should he be asked to defend these attacks in the upcoming debate(s) (Miss News and Rogers you have a journalistic responsibility to expose this). He calls his website the “democratic reporter”, but is it really? There is room for disagreement in a democracy, there is no room for this childish behaviour and personal attacks. Shame on those who defend this behaviour here and elsewhere! http://the-democratic-reporter.com/mayor-of-mississauga/Hazel_McCallion_Drunk_Driver_Quotes.htm http://the-democratic-reporter.com/PERSONS_D-R/P-DATA_D-R/HAZEL_McCALLION_D-R/HAZEL_McCALLION_DYING.HTM http://the-democratic-reporter.com/mayor-of-mississauga/Hazel_McCallions_CLOWN_Get-UP.htm

Really, at the end of the day, who really gives a $h*! about these people. I don't because I am voting for Hazel & Luz (Carolyn's lackie boy's days are done). But if they do televise a debate, they should air it on the comedy channel.

Think About It

Sep 24, 2010 12:42 AM

By switching Capone juries at the MBOT, the approach might have a different outcome if McCallion was campaigning every day due to the city was too broke to upgrade

MIRANETs bottom lines reads...unfortunately the proposed mix of reduce commercial retail and office space, high condominiums and retirement residences is entirely inappropriate and is not in character of the needs of the area and thus is not in the public interest …and certainly out of line with the new Official Plan

Yup agreed let's go, but 17 is too many. I say the community groups should decide who they think their residents would most want to hear from, 6 max. But you know someone will sue if they aren't included. I also hope that the moderators are well versed in positions all candidates have taken now and in the past (even the looney ones, who shall remain nameless) so it isn't a cakewalk for anyone

When did a debate wait patiently for one of the 17 candidates ?

So MIRANET is waiting to see if one specific mayoral candidate has the time for debate? Are they waiting to hear back from the other 16 candidates? As a resident of Mississauga, I say this ship should not wait for any self assumed dignitary. This ship should ride the democratic wave, set a date and tell all candidates to turn up. If they don't turn up it will be their loss - not the voters loss since it will obviously mean that the candidate had better thigngs to do with their time. SET THE DATE and announce it !

Who Cares if McCallion Shows Up?

Rogers TV needs to take the bull by the horns to televise *ANY* and *ALL* debates regardless of which candidates can make it. Not all candidates can attend all debates. With a month to go, surely more than one debate can be arranged, with or without the current mayor.
