National Post - Jul. 3, 2010 - By Megan O'Toole - motoole@nationalpost.com Judicial inquiry postponed on land deal involving Mayor McCallion Mississauga's judicial inquiry into allegedly suspect city business dealings has hit another snag, just days before testimony was to begin on a land deal involving Mayor Hazel McCallion and her son. All but two witnesses slated for next week have had their testimony postponed indefinitely as the commissioner examines an issue raised by Ms. McCallion's lawyer. The eleventh-hour request asks for a ruling on what standard the commissioner should employ in determining what amounts to a "conflict of interest," as stated in the inquiry's terms of reference. "It makes sense to deal with it now rather than after hearing a lot of evidence," commission counsel William McDowell said yesterday. If the inquiry spills over into the fall election period, Ms. McCallion's lawyer has asked for a hiatus to avoid fallout for her campaign.
