The Mississauga News - Sept 19, 2006 - From the Police probing assault allegations Peel Regional Police confirm they are probing an alleged assault on two men who say they were roughed up after videotaping officers drinking and partying behind a Mississauga plaza late last month. A police spokesman said the force's internal affairs unit is investigating the alleged assault, but he refused to verify the video story or give any other specifics. "All we are able to say about this is that an incident involving several off-duty officers is being investigated by our professional standards branch," Const. Pete Brandwood said. "We unfortunately can't say anything else because it might jeopardize the integrity of the investigation." It's not known how many officers are involved in the investigation, but sources told The Toronto Star the police force was recently contacted about an incident in late August involving two men in their early 20s. The men allege they were chased and roughed up by officers after they were spotted videotaping them behind a strip plaza near the 11 Division police station at Burnhamthorpe Rd. and Erin Mills Pkwy. According to the sources, the men say the officers first searched them, then got physical with them when they couldn't produce the videotape. The sources said the officers were among a group of off-duty men and women who were drinking beer in a grassy area behind a furniture store. They told The Toronto Star police had been known to use the area for off-duty gatherings in the past. Sources said residents living in townhome complexes near where the alleged party took place have been complaining for months about the noise.
