Recorded officers' party Peel Regional Police are investigating a claim by two Mississauga men who say they were chased, assaulted and intimidated by at least a dozen police officers in an attempt to retrieve a videotape that shows officers having a rowdy, alcohol-fuelled post-shift party. Nearby residents say they have long complained about the parties, which take place behind the 11 Division police station at Burnhamthorpe and Erin Mills Parkway. Richard Cimpoesu, 24, and Orlando Canizalez, 21, say that around 2 a.m. on Aug. 28, the Peel officers, all of them in plainclothes, discovered the tape, and went after the young men in an effort to take it from them. The Peel police internal affairs unit is investigating, and said the officers will be charged if any criminal activity is found. Mr. Cimpoesu and Mr. Canizalez say they have been shaken up since the incident, to the point of experiencing sleeping problems. "It would be fair to say they're traumatized," Bill Bain, their lawyer, said yesterday. The footage on the 10-minute tape is grainy and of poor quality, but Mr. Bain says the individuals clearly refer to each other as police officers. "No one's got an axe to grind," Mr. Bain said. "I could care less about the party. I care about the safety and protection of the young." Mr. Cimpoesu and Mr. Canizalez say they were collecting evidence of the loud police gatherings, which some residents say have been taking place for more than a year.
