Mississauga News - Aug. 12, 2010 - Letter by Anwar Khan, Mississauga.

Don’t run again, mayor

I fully endorse the views expressed by Therese Taylor in her article, “Mayor should step down” published Aug. 4 and in the letter from Tom McCarthy published Aug.6.

Apart from (Mayor) Hazel McCallion’s involvement in her son’s alleged shady land dealings, it’s time that a limit be imposed on the number of times an individual can run for the mayor’s job.

Three times should be the maximum.  This would be more democratic.

Let fresh blood flow into city politics.  I’m sure there are hundreds of individuals in Mississauga far more capable, caring and efficient than Hazel.

If she has an iota of dignity and self-respect left in her, she should voluntarily withdraw her name (from the next election).

Preying Mantis, praying for it doesn't make it so....

She can't run if ain't signed up and she ain't signed up. Doesn't matter anyway, because before 2014 she won't be the Mayor and her fill-in won't be voted in and just to T-you off maybe it'll be Parrish who is appointed interim Mayor. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, children.

@Canadians

Drop the crack pipe for a bit will you? The mayor WILL RUN AGAIN and has said repeatedly that she will run again. What part of that is so difficult for you to understand?

I pretty much knew they were sketchy from the get go, I mean come on "famale". Their "comment" was marked offensive on another letter until it disappeared and I just cursed them out in the comments of a news article.

Harrasment at Yuan Ming Supermarket

Harassment at Yuan Ming Supermarket This out of topic, but very urgent, I write this email but the editor haven't put my message in here, I don't know why, I needed some help , A couple days ago I went for groceries to Yuan Ming Supermarket in Hurontario. One of the cashier, search/ open my shopping bag and my purse in front of customer. They make a wrong accusation, and they didn't apologize to me. I asked to see the manager, the manager said, they suspect someone else, but she didn't apologize to me. It's also hard to communicate with them , because most of them can't speak English and they are really rude. I have been wondering why the goverment allowed that kind of supermarket to operate, the staff are rude, can't speak English, they make their own law, like they still live in their previous country. The sanitation of the store also questionable, I am really hurt of their action to me, they didn't even apologize.

@ Tony Jackson, sorry but I disagree.

You wrote, "However, this time there is a reason for the voters to look for a replacement for Hazel." No there isn't. What makes you say that? Mississauga voters don't care about fraud and corruption and under-the-table secret deals giving the Mayor's son's company $4 million and the court file sealed. Mississauga voters care about one thing (and this isn't me talking about Nando Iannicca) their WALLETS. And their wallets tell them VOTE HAZEL.

@ Tony, re: Mantis' comment being right, I just read it.

He's right because of this statement. " In a democray, the voters get to decide." And I had to search hard to find the comment... but it was Justanopinion's Aug 12, 2010 6:12 PM comment, "Face reality". He wrote, "Our mayor could be caught, in the library, with the candlestick in her hand, over the dead body, and she would still win by a landslide!" I agree 100%. I am dead-serious. Hazel McCallion could indeed be caught over a dead body and she'd still win by a landslide. Indeed there are people here who'd suggest the deceased bludgeoned himself to death and then handed off to Hazel. And make no mistake, THAT is a reflection of Mississaugans! On the bright side, I get a unique four years to document her give advice to others on how to conduct themselves! Document Traditional Media reporting on a mayor they now *KNOW* about.

This may be just a technicality. . . .

But; the mayor cannot, at this time, withdraw her name from the next election; because she has not submitted it yet.

Anwar Khan writes like the corruption is limited just to MYTHissauga

As though if MYTHissauga were unique. As though if MYTHissauga were fixed all would be okay. There's a much larger problem both in this province --and country. Admittedly our governments lying to us (and keeping information from us) is nothing new. I fear that while term limits will help, the kind of people attracted to senior public service is the problem. "Absolute Power Corrupts" isn't quite right. It's far more likely that the corrupt are *attracted* to power. And the remaining $$corrupt$$ pull those strings. As we witnessed in the Friends of Hazel Rally. That said, I still can't explain that if MYTHissauga were so corrupt, why there'd be a REAL Inquiry and we'd have the lawyer we do in Clifford Lax.

Prohibitive election-campaign expenses: Incumbent’s unfair-advantage

Mantits’ argument is right. For a new candidate, it’s too expensive to effectively run a citywide campaign for Mayor’s office. In the recent past elections, Hazel had no opponents who are known to all the voters. Not everyone heard of Mr.Willis and Mr.Barber. The same situation may occur this time too. However, this time there is a reason for the voters to look for a replacement for Hazel. Let’s hope more competent and honest candidates come forward for this election.

She'll Run Again and Win Big

The writer of this letter doesn't comprehend democracy. In a democray, the voters get to decide. It's entirely up to us, given that she has stated that she will run again, to decide whether the mayone should continue in office or not. There is no reason for term limits at all. The voters will always make up their minds and elect the candidate oftheir choice. The overwhelming choice of Mississauga voters is Mayor McCallion. She has been the choice of 95% or so of voters for quite some time and will be our choice by the same margin this time around.

Stale

I would have thought this was evident 10 years ago. The only thing saving Americans from truly atrocious government is term limitations although that doesn't extend to the senate. Public political service shouldn't be a job for life. The bigger problem here is a council that won't step up to the plate until they're guaranteed a win.

Power: the most dangerous addiction of all

30 plus years continuously in power, no rehab centre could help. Hazel has lost all her sense of ethics and moral values. Now, she's in "I am the state" mind-set. Even in the third-world's rotten corrupt (democrtatic) politics, an accused will resign (or forced to resign) while facing an inquiry. Shame on us, Canadians!
