Mississauga News - Aug. 26, 2010 - By Louie Rosella - lrosella@mississauga.net

Police assigned to inquiry

Peel Regional Police will continue to assign two officers to the Mississauga judicial inquiry.

Police Chief Mike Metcalf said one officer is stationed inside the Burnhamthorpe Rd. W. courtroom and the other will be on patrol outside.  They were assigned to security as the inquiry got underway at the request of Commissioner Douglas Cunningham.

Officers aren't "monitoring evidence," the chief said.  Any evidence of criminal activities uncovered by the inquiry would be turned over to an appropriate agency for investigation.

Peel Police and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) out of Port Credit were dispatched to the courtroom as a precaution last week when citizen journalist and community activist Donald Barber was caught recording testimony and then interrupted proceedings to complain about his lack of access to television footage.

The inquiry is currently probing Mayor Hazel McCallion's role in a failed $14.4-million City Centre land deal brokered by her son Peter McCallion.

It resumes Sept. 13.

It’s heartwarming here tonight to see a true dialogue developing…

Based on respect for this forum, facts that have been laid out at the inquiry and the truth that some of us seek. ForTheTruth puts it wisely that we should direct our comments to the inquiry or “article in question and not to the person commenting.” Canadians also honestly points out that the abuse dished out by some is hard to take and hard not to comment on, especially when the lies are about oneself. As far as I know, police were assigned early on. The first time I attended on June 2nd, the first time the Mayor took the stand I’m pretty positive two police officers sat in the back, though I can’t find it in my notes. On July 27, I noted that two police officers were sitting at the back and again on August 11th, well before Don Barber was found to be taping the inquiry.

You cannot reason with trolls

@ForTheTruth: I wish this forum would work the way you think it should, but it doesn't and I for one see no hope that it ever will. Your vision assumes that we all keep open minds, apply logic, and accept the outcome. There are those here who meet none of those assumptions. (By the way I fully expect to be accused of being one of them, because that's how people like that react; they can't help themselves.) They are here for one reason only: to provoke. This species has long been extant on the internet as "trolls". Trolls post only to insult and fight. The only proven method for dealing with trolls is to ignore them completely, therefore: PLEASE do NOT feed the trolls! @Muse & @Uatu: see what happened when you two started feeding them again?

@FTTruth

Points are well taken. The abuse dished out by Concerned Resident @ all manner of posting over the many past months is difficult to stomach; more effort to ignore this individual is a good approach. If police have been assigned to this inquiry @ the request of the Commissioner it may or may not be just because of the antics of Donald Barber. What else that might be is unknown @ this time. BTW the article in the Star (below) is focused on Truth and Justice - make sure you read it.

Focus on Truth and Justice requires discipline not to be distracted

We have such a great vehicle here to communicate, educate and learn from one another with respect for the individual. Focusing on the article and really reading it for true understanding will help in ones dialogue and in allowing others who read the comments to move forward with enlightenment and contribute. ( Not to many add comment from what is posted todate.) Using other approaches takes precious time away from the facts and may distract resultant justice that will come if it is so decided; whether someone is a mother or son/daughter, husband of so and so or claims they where compulsive to get the job done but did not realise someone could benefit so much. BTW did we every hear of obsessed shoplifters doing it for the good of ?? How about all of us think about directing our comments to the inquiry or article in question and not to the person commenting. If one does not like a comment at least we can respect one another and phrase things with Acts of Kindness that will be returned. End of hint of l
