McCallion sticks up for mom

Taking a stand.

Peter McCallion is adamant neither he nor his mother, Mayor Hazel McCallion, did anything wrong in his failed bid to build an upscale hotel in Mississauga’s downtown core.

“No, we did not,” McCallion told reporters today outside the Burnhamthorpe Rd. courthouse following his two days of testimony at the Mississauga judicial inquiry.

McCallion refused to comment when asked whether he misled the mayor on his role in World Class Developments (WCD), the owner of the proposed project.

“I’m not getting into that,” he said.

McCallion said the inquiry, which could cost Mississauga taxpayers more than $5 million, was unnecessary.

“It’s a dead deal,” he said, stalking off in his trademark Stetson and all-black outfit.

This afternoon’s hearing began with submissions by McCallion’s lawyer, Brian Gover, the mayor’s lawyer, Elizabeth McIntyre, and the City of Mississauga’s outside counsel, Clifford Lax, on whether the latter should be allowed to probe McCallion on a $450,000 mortgage he took on his home in 2007.  Noting the inquiry’s mandate was “to get to the truth,” Commission Justice Douglas Cunningham ruled in Lax’s favour.

Lax immediately began grilling McCallion on why the mortgage was placed with Leo Couprie and not with a third party, such as a lending institution.  Lax suggested it didn’t pass the smell test since Couprie was McCallion’s WCD partner.

“I could have, but I didn’t,” McCallion replied.

McCallion, about a year later, sold the house to Couprie for $800,000; he currently rents it from Couprie to live in.

In a bombshell ruling, Cunningham indicated he will not give much weight to a line of questioning of McCallion by McIntyre.

In response to McIntyre’s questions, McCallion had repeatedly denied his mother knew much of his idea, back in 2003, to build the hotel/convention centre complex.

Even years later, when the bid was in full flight, McIntyre got McCallion to acknowledge that his mother knew very little of the inner workings of WCD, including his own role.  He said he also kept his mother in the dark about the other principals.

“You led her to believe that your only role in WCD was as an agent,” she suggested.

“Correct,” said McCallion.

Queried about the mayor’s witnessing of two agreements with Couprie in 2003, McCallion said she was at the Toronto dinner simply to advise the pair about a hotel operator in Asia.

Commission counsel William McDowell interrupted the cross-examination – calling it “sweetheart questioning.”

He then asked Cunningham if he was going to lend credence to the testimony.

The judge tersely replied, “Not much.”

HAHAHAHAHA Someone disagrees with both Toronto Star's Royson James and Toronto Sun's Michele Mandel

I guess that's because both James and Mandel did their homework and the Disagree'r didn't.

@ComeOn

I'm puzzled. When was Hazel on the stand in this part of the inquiry? Another Barbarian tactic, just throw a comment out there and make others refute it. Sort of like not being able to disprove a negative. Why don't you just ask when the last time was she beat her dog?

Toronto Sun, Michele Mandel "Hazel McCallion's son keeps it under his hat"

"For poor Peter McCallion, the divorced real estate agent with a Grade 12 education who’s never risen to the success of his mom..." "But being her son sure seems to have some advantages. Like when you’re involved in a hugely lucrative land deal in Mississauga, you can pick up the phone to the mayor and you and your partners can get a meeting at the nearest steakhouse faster than you can say “Hurricane.” And when you run into some roadblocks along the way, mommy will unleash her fury to get what you want. "In one of many on her calendar, mom and son had a private dinner meeting on Aug. 29, 2005 with two WCD investors with a notation that it was to discuss 'in camera issues re OMERS...' In camera proceedings are supposed to be private and not shared by the mayor with her son and his investors."

Toronto Star, "Ending the state of denial" Royson James (alternate title, "Royson James discovers MYTHissauga")

"To the army of Hazel McCallion apologists — many itching to re-elect her Oct. 25 — testimony out of the Mississauga judicial inquiry must be painful. At best, Peter McCallion used his mom, the good graces of her Streetville home and the tax-supported resources of the mayor’s office to feather his own nest. And he did it, as Hazel’s lawyer told the son Wednesday at the inquiry, without revealing the extent of his business partnerships, leaving an unsuspecting mayor in the dark. At worst, he was aided and abetted by the powerful mayor mom who seems to have her hand in every deal, a finger in every transaction, and bared knuckles at the ready to drive hesitant developers to the altar. Whatever you believe, the public process is badly broken in Mississauga. Follow the trail of emails, telephone calls, requests for private... rest at: http://tinyurl.com/2ab62lu

Shame on you Hazel!

You and Peter had a chance to take the high road and tell us it was a mistake and we are sorry. Instead we get disgraceful insulting excuses that a grade four student could have invented.
