Son misled mayor, lawyer suggests

Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion’s lawyer has unveiled her defence at a judicial inquiry probing the mayor’s involvement in a $14.4 million land sale her son was brokering: Peter misled her.

“The bottom line is that you misled your mother as to your actual role in World Class Developments Ltd.,” Elizabeth McIntyre, the mayor’s lawyer, suggested to Peter McCallion at the end of a blistering day of questioning.

“Misled or I wasn’t aware of it at the time,” replied the younger McCallion, who has claimed at the inquiry that he did not tell his mother he was an owner of the company attempting to build a billion-dollar hotel/convention centre complex because he didn’t realize “at the time” that he was an owner.

He said he thought he was simply the company’s real estate agent.

The inquiry, which is being held in the Burnhamthorpe Rd. W. courthouse, heard earlier this week that his famous mother had signed as a witness to a trust agreement made with Thornhill businessman Leo Couprie in January 2007 that effectively gave him a stake in the company.

“You misled her as to your real role,” repeated McIntyre, prompting McCallion to reply: “At the time I expressed what I thought my role was.”

The exchange came at the end of a series of questions to which McCallion responded that, while he was close to his mother — seeing her five or six times a week — he told her nothing about his financial affairs.

Evidence given at the inquiry so far shows the mayor championed the land sale and project and involved herself in the internal business of the development company.

McIntyre’s questions on behalf of the mayor prompted an interruption from commissioner lawyer William McDowell, who pointed out to Justice Douglas Cunningham that the inquiry rules prohibit asking “sweetheart” questions during cross-examination.

When McDowell asked him not to give too much weight to McIntyre’s line of questioning, Cunningham stunned observors by replying that he would indeed give such questions “not much weight.”

Earlier in the day, Clifford Lax, lawyer for the City of Mississauga, attacked the younger McCallion with questions about a series of dinners and meetings he arranged between his business associates and his mother.

Telephone logs of dozens of calls made to the mayor’s office reveal how intimately Hazel McCallion was involved in the company’s concerns.

Tony DeCicco, whom Peter McCallion brought into World Class Developments as a majority owner, repeatedly called the mayor’s office to discuss the company’s internal business.  He once called her three times in one day, sometimes casually making references to Peter’s involvement in the company.

The meetings, which always included Peter McCallion, took place in restaurants across the city and even in the mayor’s house, offering a glimpse of DeCicco’s informal and familiar relationship with Hazel McCallion.

Under repeated questioning, Peter McCallion said he could not remember details of the meetings, and denied that he had helped the company gain access to the mayor’s office.  He said DeCicco had become the mayor’s friend without his involvement.

One thorny issue Mayor McCallion waded into was the departure of Murray Cook, who had become an unwanted partner in the business.  She was enlisted to help talk Cook into giving up his 20 per cent share in the company.

“Were you able to or have you considered getting Murray to sign off the agreement terminating (the controversial part of a shareholder agreement)?” the telephone log recorded by a mayoral assistant quotes DeCicco saying on Nov. 5, 2007. “The sooner we get it, the better we are.”
DeCicco phoned again twice that day, asking in one call to speak to Hazel McCallion about Cook.

Cook, a friend of Peter McCallion since their childhood in Streetsville, could have forced World Class to buy him out at considerably more than the $200,000 he took with him when he finally departed.

“Why would you need to involve the mayor of Mississauga for what is essentially a private issue?”  Lax asked.

McCallion responded: “I didn’t.  (DeCicco) did.”

World Class also asked the mayor to put pressure on OMERS to back down from a clause requiring a hotel to be built on the land before it would finalize the sale to World Class.

The inquiry also heard that the mayor once met with DeCicco and Vaughan developer John DiPoce, again arranged by Peter McCallion, to discuss “in camera” issues that came up about OMERS at a municipal conference.

In camera meetings are closed to the public and the subject matter is supposed to remain secret.

The inquiry resumes this morning at 10 a.m.

I've been reviewing all the video from the December 2, 2009 "Friends of Hazel Rally" Betty Merkely and Harold Shipp

I shot non-stop video of that December 2009 Friends of Hazel Rally. TRANSCRIPT: Harold Shipp says, "I'm here tonight because I firmly believe that the Judicial Inquiry is a collossal waste of your money and mine." And now I wonder how much did Shipp know about World Class Development? Or Betty Merkely saying, "I keep asking myself the same question over and over again. Why? Why would seven Councillors vote for a Judicial Inquiry after they had already been given the outside legal opinion from a Toronto law firm at a cost to the taxpayers of approximately $46,000? A legal opinion that should have put their concerns to rest." And I have to ask. What did Betty Merkely know? Or Ted Woloshyn. Or the "Fantastic Four"?

@ Tony to be clear I have zero aspirations!

Tony you wrote, "Your empathy, sentiments and admiration for the most popular woman of our city is quite reasonable and fair, especially when you have chartered your aspirations towards her colorful throne." I've said this often both in writing and from the Get-Go on the day I filed the papers. Here's YouTube (January 6, 2010) called ""The Mississauga Muse" and the "Friends of Hazel" (Episode 1: Shattering the MYTH of MYTHissauga)" and I just watched it for the first time since January. Given what the Judicial Inquiry has revealed It is SO FUNNY! Featuring Patrick "We are the wind in Hurricane Hazel" Mendes at the Friends of Hazel Rally. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQGd91MXKlE I was SO RIGHT about this not being "an issue-drive election". Last, I'm not being "admirable" but rather scientific. You don't draw conclusions until your data/stats are compiled and analyzed. But then again I don't know who you are and you might know a LOT more than me even with my Freedom of Information....

@ the Sorry MUSE

Your empathy, sentiments and admiration for the most popular woman of our city is quite reasonable and fair, especially when you have chartered your aspirations towards her colorful throne. Every gullible woman in our city thinks that hazel is a phenomenon or larger than life avatar (Thanks to the “Friends of Hazel” mafia, their money and the media propaganda that their money could buy). Hazel is (used to be) a clever and cunning politician. She is the centre of the “absolute (political) power” in this city, so does the “absolute corruption”.

@ Tony you wrote, "You people blindly placed your faith/support in that corrupt mother-son duo and have been defending them with the benefit of doubt."

Be careful Tony, sorry but I can't agree with you writing "corrupt mother-son duo". Seeing the evidence I've zero doubt Peter McCallion is one piece of work (ick and double-ick). But Judge Cunningham drove home the point about Fairness. And it's not fair to condemn Madam Mayor when the evidence isn't in. Because Tony, it isn't! There are mothers left in the dark about their sons waiting til their asleep, then digging in their purses before slipping out a window to party the night away. And mom's none the wiser. I voted for Hazel McCallion from 1978 to the 2003 election and she deserves to be heard out. A reminder Tony. WE'RE the Good Guys. We want Truth, right? So you wait for all evidence to be presented. Especially the Mayor's lawyer and the defense. Perhaps it's my experience seeing City Staff lie to McCallion for the last ohhhhh seven years that gives me a perspective (and sympathy) you can't muster right now. But Peter McCallion? Zero capacity to feel Shame. (I'd shrivel and die if I did to my mom what h

Testy posts

Snap you've snapped; Canadians feel sorry for you; reality can be disheartening when you've put your own good reputation on the line for people who don't deserve it; people, who smile sweetly to your face and as they carry on their ways and means. Muse, glad to see that you see politicans matter and there are good folks working away at city hall. That is why empty-netter politicians needa go on a regular basis.

@Snap ___________The ground is shaking

Look at your pathetic situation. You people blindly placed your faith/support in that corrupt mother-son duo and have been defending them with the benefit of doubt. Now, the testimonies uncovered the deception. Lies and the shadow of doubt cannot stand any more. Your world is shaking and about to fall apart. Snap, Mantis, CR, MR et al., stop defending those criminals, criminals who looted the public/tax payers in millions.

@ southpaw And let's not forget that my biggest "supporter" is City lawyer Clifford Lax

Judge Cunningham delivered a revelation yesterday. That Lax wasn't just the City's lawyer, and not just lawyer for the Seven Councillors who voted for the Inquiry, but lawyer for all of Council. And because Council represents the citizens of Mississauga, Clifford Lax supports Us! It's Clifford Lax who's made me buckle in my two beliefs that the City is Evil and that elected officials don't matter (that they're there to create the illusion of democracy). Clifford Lax is proving me wrong. There's Good at the City of Mississauga! And it's Fighting Back! And I just SO LOVE IT!

@ Snap, Science isn't about Voting. I'm only interested in what the evidence shows.

Don't care about "supporters". There really *are* people like me. One. One person who sees a Wrong and then stands up against Bullies and says, "HEY! That's wrong!" I lucked out with this Judicial Inquiry. But would've been prepared to remain Just One saying, ""HEY! That's wrong!" But now I've got Traditional Media helping. Seeing. And they've a much stronger voice than I do. Will borrow from the youth who write me about the evil of The System and the Lies. Go **** Yourself. Because I know the EVIL you support. And perhaps do.

Royson James to MYTHissauga (the highlights) "Step one: End the denials."

"To the army of Hazel McCallion apologists — many itching to re-elect her Oct. 25 — testimony out of the Mississauga judicial inquiry must be painful. At best, Peter McCallion used his mom, the good graces of her Streetsville home and the tax-supported resources of the mayor’s office to feather his own nest." "At worst, he was aided and abetted by the powerful mayor mom who seems to have her hand in every deal, a finger in every transaction, and bared knuckles at the ready to drive hesitant developers to the altar." "Whatever you believe, the public process is badly broken in Mississauga." "'I didn’t do anything wrong. There is no conflict of interest here.' Maybe McCallion believes this, after almost a half century in the public eye — a peculiar “see no evil” focus that exists in Mississauga." " Such behaviour is clearly forbidden in most municipalities. We hope."

@ Mississauga Resident --before you crapped out your comment did you flush your own bias to confirm mine?

You wrote, "Why would I bother to read your opinion, when I can read (theoretically) unbiased articles from a real journalist?" That was the point of my sharing my blog full of tweets. To show just how close I called them to what the "real journalists" wrote, @$$****. I've read every article/commentary out there. Torstar, Globe, Sun, NatPost --everything and guess what? THEY'RE ALL SUPPORTERS! Because they see Peter McCallion's testimony just like I did, And get this --best of all many are beginning to acknowledge MYTHissauga! The Traditional Media are finally seeing what I've been observing for years. Royson James wrote exactly what I've been saying, "In essence, the lawyers and the commissioner are looking to build a better future. Hazel McCallion will move on one day. And when she does, Mississauga must have in place a new standard of doing business." Keep denying @$$****!
