Makes you wonder how Peter McCallion can claim to be so poor, needing taxpayers money for lawyer in this Inquiry.

Mississauga News - July 13, 2010 - By  Mississauga News.

Company received $4M pay-out over hotel deal

A development firm represented by Mayor McCallion's son received a $4 million pay-out after a deal to build a hotel in the city centre fell through, The National Post is reporting.

The Post says World Class Developments (WCD), a company fronted by Peter McCallion, was paid $4 million by the owner of the 3.5 hectare parcel land, the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS), as part of a legal settlement.

Documents filed at the ongoing Mississauga judicial inquiry indicate that WCD intended to purchase the City Centre land for $14.4 million and then build a four-star hotel that would be run by an international hotel chain, possibly Marriott, complete with a fitness centre and full-service restaurant.

However, the deal fell apart.

The Post says a settlement was reached after WCD challenged a move by OMERS in the summer of 2009 to legally terminate the hotel deal in court.

According to The Post, the settlement was reached while the City of Mississauga was negotiating a separate deal with Sheridan College that involved the same land.

After the WCD deal was terminated, OMERS subsequently sold the land to the City, which, in turn, leased it to Sheridan College.

The ongoing Mississauga judicial inquiry is examining whether Mayor McCallion had a conflict of interest in the controversial deal.  Last week, documents that were presented at the inquiry indicated the mayor met with OMERS chief Michael Nobrega while the WCD deal was still in play.

A conditional deal was in place for OMERS to sell the land to WCD, and in a memo from WCD lawyer Emilio Bisceglia dated Feb. 28, 2008 containing amendments to the agreement of purchase and sale, there are handwritten notes by OMERS president Michael Nobrega stating a "meeting with Hazel" will take place the following month in his office.

McCallion and her son are expected to testify during proceedings, which resume July 26.

@ConcernedResident

So now we've gone from "show me evidence that he got a payout" to "show me it wasn't a reasonable amount". Those straws keep getting smaller and smaller, don't they?

Urbaniak? Where?

And funny how when I quoted Urbaniak he was swept away and I was accused of shilling for his book! :-)

$4 million payout for $14.4 million property. 28%. Is 28% value of land regular payouts for deals falling through?

4 Millions, Where's the rest of the payout?

Hundreds of millions worth 'city's utility business' has given out to OMERS with full control (through an under-the-table veto). At least 10% should have paid as bribe. Is it the McCallion son-mother duo, the cheapest in Canada to bribe?

The Game Ain't Over

Also quoted in the article - "Tom Urbaniak, an academic with expertise in Mississauga politics, says it is too early to determine whether $4-million was a reasonable settlement amount. “It depends in part on whether the purchase-and-sale agreement was properly terminated by the vendors,” he noted. “We are hearing somewhat different versions of that crucial event.” Interesting that none of you wannabe thespians mentioned this part of the article.

Hazel McCallion Scandal Grows!

Now we know the amount of the secret agreement. I am sure the Hazel supporters are hiding. Afterall she sold them a bill of goods when she kept silent and let them believe she had done nothing wrong. Where is the media to demand that Hazel appologize to the residents and the other members of Council? The media keeps on trucking out the conflict of interest stuff when we are looking at a much more serious picture and many more serious terms could easily apply here. Shame on you Hazel!
