Mississauga News - July 8, 2010 - Letter by  Patrick Mendes, Mississauga.

Voters will decide

Dear Editor:

The judicial inquiry that was called in Mississauga in late 2009 is one of only three such inquiries that have ever been called in Ontario.  They are generally reserved for extremely serious matters as they consume significant resources and occupy a lot of time that is often better spent conducting the business of the City.

In the fall of 2009, a legal opinion was commissioned that examined allegations that Mayor Hazel McCallion had not declared a conflict of interest in relation to business dealings between the City of Mississauga and her son, Peter McCallion.

After extensive investigation, the independent law firm contracted by the City found that Mayor McCallion was not in the wrong and was fully compliant with all Ontario statutes governing municipal political behavior.  The cost of this investigation was $47,000.

Unfortunately, this was not the end of the matter.  Some councillors were not satisfied with this legal opinion.  They called a judicial inquiry into this matter and delve into past dealings.

At the time, the councillors in favour of the inquiry claimed it would only cost $2.5 million.  However, the inquiry is expected to cost over $5 million.  What the final price tag for this inquiry will be is anyone’s guess.

This is fast becoming a colossal waste of taxpayers’ money for a witch-hunt.  The residents of Mississauga will not stand idly by as a few individuals use our money to tarnish the reputation of Mayor McCallion.

As a long-time Mississauga resident and a taxpayer, I am appalled by the waste and disregard for taxpayers’ money that some members of city council have shown.  Mississauga has been a model of how a city should be run.  Through this judicial inquiry, our city’s good name is being tarnished.

On Oct. 25, residents of Mississauga will have the opportunity to send a message to the councillors who are supporting the judicial inquiry.  Enough is enough.  We need councillors who will stop playing politics and instead work to plan for the future.

Patrick Mendes (the author) is running for council in Ward 10

Patrick Mendes is a Bonnie Crombie buddy running against Sue McFadden, to name a few Liberal buddies runnning there, to make sure that Sue McFadden stays put and outa Crombie and Delaney's hair or face as an opponent. Too bad Mendes isn't up front enough to tell us in his letter on this blog post anyway. ....... just what we don't need more of at City Hall. Yep, ' we need councillors who stop playing politics.' Which leave Patrick outa the loop.

How did penniless Peter get a deal with blillion dollar investment company OMERS? Why was Hazel directly the land deal? What details on in the secret settlement worth millions? What staff at the City SURPRESSED information? What City Manager knew the details but kept it from Council for months? How did staff try to get exempt from the Inquiry? Yeah there are no issues here. Mantis, SNAP, CR or whch ever McCallion you are deal wiith the above.

Hazel McCallion Scandal Rocks Mississauga

Mendes is sad lad that cannot read the Hazel McCalllion scandal in every newspaper except the Sun??? It was even carried by he French CBC but Mendes soldiers on. He will not let facts or reality dent his world of la la la. We best add his name to the succide watch. He was a speaker at the Friends of Hazel rally. I doubt he will put that on his resume this Fall.

?@ Big E. we can't chance losing a progressive councillor

You wrote, "Actually we need councillors that will GOYA and challenge the mayor in this election, not further down the road when their personal win is a sure thing." McCallion's invincible. Above the Law and invincible. There is nothing --nothing, that would prevent Mississaugans from voting for her. I have Nando Iannicca on record saying that no matter what, when it comes time for voters to put an X beside a name they think only of their pocketbooks. Doesn't matter who, it's political suicide. I don't think that even Stephen Harper could beat her. That means a councillor that you'd cheer for going up against McCallion WILL lose and that means we also will lose that councillor. I sure don't want ANY of the good ones to take that chance. As for the other Four?... they'd never challenge since they give the Mayor unqualified support.

'Let me tell you folks'

@Mantis 07/10/10 - 1:56:37 PM Get your head out of you know what and go read the terms of reference for the inquiry. The conflict of interest is a minor point. The whole premise of the inquiry is to make recommendations not only on who may have committed a misconduct or had a conflict but also on what should be included under the conflict of interest rules going forward. This is about good governance. I agree that you should be judged on the rules that were in play at the time of your actions when it comes to conflict, common law, fiduciary responsibility, etc. Stop trying to take attention away from really happened here.

Posts being deleted

A lot of posts have been deleted here; I guess Mendes and the Mayor's supporters found them offensive. Democracy stymied in Mississauga again. The truth hurts doesn't it? By the end of this inquiry everyone will know the truth and the voters will decide.

So when's the future start?

Actually we need councillors that will GOYA and challenge the mayor in this election, not further down the road when their personal win is a sure thing.

Strange enough!

This fellow (mendes) doesn't follow the progress of the inquiry or doesn't read this newspaper. The inquiry has already been uncovered so many information on the corruption (involving millions of dollars) and nepotism at the city hall by Hazel McCallion and her cronies.
