Mississauga News - May. 11, 2010 - Letter by The Rev. Dr. John T. Mathew, Mississauga

Treat her fairly

Dear Editor:

I read with great interest your article, “Mayor asks for inquiry delay” ( Week of May 5-12).

Here in Mississauga, as a new, nonetheless aging, Canadian, I feel I belong to the majority of almost 60 per cent of our population in Mississauga who were born outside Canada.

I am naturally interested to know who represents my civic concerns, social ideals, fiscal interests, ethical values, etc., on our municipal council.  How do we encourage newcomers to become productively involved in the day-today life of our city?  Is the racial-ethnic demographic diversification of our city apparent in our city council?

Having served Ontario communities most of my life as an ordained minister in The United Church of Canada, I have come to recognize that, generally speaking, Canadians are too polite to be up-front or straightforward.

I have been a keen observer of the leaderships of Mayor Hazel McCallion and her hard-working team.  McCallion has an admirable and extensive track record of achievements.

I was immensely pleased to read the assurance offered to her (by the inquiry commission) that “she will be treated with immaculate fairness.”

Non-Candidate worries her non-existent re-election campaign in MYTHissauga harmed by thorough Inquiry - start

That’s right, a person who has not even filed to be a candidate for the Mayor’s seat is concerned about the bad press or the “”smoke and dust thrown up" by the media's coverage of the inquiry”, that could hurt, (more than her own actions), her chances at being the Mayor of Mississauga again. If so, why has she not filed the nomination papers by now, to at least show confidence in her own chances at re-election? Surely, one of the highest paid politicians in Canada can afford the filing fee and even if she couldn’t, wouldn’t her “Friends” be able to help her out?

Non-Candidate worries her non-existent re-election campaign in MYTHissauga harmed by thorough Inquiry

Maybe when it was reported that her son has not paid income tax for years it was an indication of very serious hard times in the McCallion family. Will Mississaugans be asked to elect the Mississauga Rattler because she needs the money? It was asked that the “Mississauga judicial inquiry to be postponed if it's going to run into the municipal election period”, says the Mayor’s lawyer, so who should we believe, a lawyer or a politician? How odd, from a Mayor who says she campaigns all the time, brags she doesn’t have to campaign during elections and often isn’t even in the country! The real question is, how can a woman who doesn’t do election campaigning, rightfully claim an inquiry into the way her family does business, could undermine her efforts? For sure, Mississaugans will not see the feisty old Mayor doing door-to-door canvassing of Mississauga’s sprawling residential areas.

Non-Candidate worries her non-existent re-election campaign in MYTHissauga harmed by thorough Inquiry - maybe this was to run at the beginning of April.

Maybe it is official now - the Mayor of Mississauga, Hazel McCallion says this Inquiry is about the effort to prevent her from being re-elected or a political means to an end - hers! That the 89-year-old Mayor thinks putting off for months (when waking up each day is never a sure thing), is a good thing - for her, but does this tactic serve justice? It’s enough to make you hit a bottle of bobblehead wine, vintage Hazel in a bottle that goes through you like a hurricane and leaves you nodding.
