Don Cherry among celebrities who will rally for
Hazel McCallion tonight

Supporters of Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion plan to gather tonight in a show of solidarity with the city’s leader.

Ms. McCallion has come under intense public scrutiny over her involvement in a multi-million-dollar land deal arranged by her son, and that deal, along with a host of other allegedly suspect transactions concerning the City of Mississauga, will be at the forefront of a pending judicial inquiry.

Tonight’s rally at the Mississauga Convention Centre kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and is expected to draw a number of local celebrities, including sports commentator Don Cherry.

Councillor Katie Mahoney, who opposes the inquiry, says the rally will demonstrate the city’s “strong support” for their mayor.  But Councillor Carolyn Parrish, who has led the charge, says the rally has “nothing to do” with the inquiry, which focuses on the tangled dealings between a number of different entities.

Rally organizer Diane Morgan said the event was born from residents’ disappointment after their pleas for the city to forgo the costly judicial inquiry fell on deaf ears.

Yes, she's done a lot of good for the city in her career. But you can't just go around using the power of your office to help your kids land lucrative business deals and then waltz away because you've got a good record.

If she's not investigated thoroughly for this, it's setting an example to other people in government that it's optional to recuse yourself from conflict of interest matters.

Not really surprising. One loud mouth supporting another.

What exactly has she done??

She was a bystander of urban sprawl, which she supported to the point where she now admits that Mississauga can never have the density to warrant a good public transit system.

She effectively made her citizens either drive or drive to the TTC.
